riley never believed in santa clause, the easter bunny, all those imaginary beings your parents created to bring cheer into the holidays. his parents weren’t religious in the slightest, but were often out and about during his childhood. he wasn’t in any need of help from fictional creatures, he had his homework, his weekend training and family time. that was all he really needed. it was only when riley rounded fourteen that he began to realize his childhood was slightly odd, that it was missing pieces.

❝ we’re broken people now, man. ❞ and that’s all they were, really. broken, defeated and damn well doomed. he shrugs some then and brings a cigarette to his lips, taking a long, albeit shaky breath before looking back at his friend. thomas being one of the very few he trusts, and cares for but probably the only one who gets to see this side of the hunter. ❝ i feel like i’m burning out sometimes, y’know? not that i want to give up or something but i’m so damn sick and tired. ❞ and if he was being honest with himself here, the fact that there was hardly a trace left of the person he once was, it takes some of the fight out of him and how could it not? the things he’s seen and the things he’s done since the world’s gone to hell, there’s NO GOING BACK from that. thoughts of just how much he was forced to change these past few years still send chills down his spine. ❝ i don’t know, man, i guess it’s just hard to keep on finding the motivation to go out there and fight. ❞

can’t have that around camp.

it’s a rare thing to catch david off guard, especially doing something he’d rather not be found doing. as much doesn’t remotely show on his face, which is masked by an easy grin that frames his joint. “aw, c’mon now, tommy boy. it’s medicinal.” drugs of any kind are few and far between, but weed has been the easiest for david to get his hands on. usually it would be given to those with pain or anxiety, if at all, considering it’s promotion of laziness, it’s lack of focus. having something like this out in the open of camp tends to make the leaders a little uneasy, gives a sense of freedom in an otherwise organized and uniform society. so these days it almost strictly runs under the radar, exchanges hands for far more selfish reasons. for david, that reason is pure boredom.

he takes a beat, and then another drag, before he’s gesturing an invitation to thomas to join him at the treeline, just on the edge of the camp. “you up for a try? can’t imagine you ever had a taste for it before, huh? shit, man, you’re already cool as cucumber, aren’t ya.” got to be, david figures, to deal with the shit ugly injuries he comes across nowadays. “here -- won’t hurt you.”
