WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?
THE RECENT eruption of Taal raises the awareness that Angeles City lives in the shadow of Mt. Pinatubo, a still active volcano which erupted violently in 1991 and minor eruptions continued in 1992 and 1993.
The 1991 eruption was the second largest of the 20th century, the effects can still be seen around Angeles City today.
It is unlikely that Pinatubo will erupt again anytime soon, it was over 600 years since it did so previously, but it is an active volcano and is being monitored constantly.
Much was learned about volcanos and their behaviour because of Pinatubo and as a result more sophisticated warning systems are now in place, even so it's always a good idea to be prepared.
More than 350 people died during the eruption, many of them from collapsing roofs, and estimated 50 Aeta people hiding in a cave on the mountain perished in the initial eruption.
Disease that broke out in evacuation camps and the continuing mud flows in the area caused additional deaths, bringing the total death toll to 722 people.
The event left more than 200,000 people homeless.
Good management and foresight by local authorities back then initiated an evacuation plan and support from volcanologists from the United States prevented the toll from being much higher.
The Philippines has 300 volcanos, 25 are active and 27 could become active including inactive Mt Arayat which lies 16 miles to the east of Angeles City.
A free download PDF brochure, prepared by The Swagman from the latest information from Philvoc will let you know what to do before, during and after an eruption.

Traverse Hiking in Mt Arayat
Traverse Hiking in Mt Arayat
Mt Arayat in the Pampanga area of Luzon, Philippines is probably the most visible mountain travelling in the area.
Hiking up gives a grand view of the area and a highly enjoyable experience with a few challenges.
This is a 8 hour traverse hike which started being dropped on one side of the mountain. Later we were picked up on the other side at the end of the day.
