Mt. Helix

Focusing less on trying to replicate what things actually look like, and more on how I feel about the subject-- here's how it feels to drive up and down Mt. Helix in the middle of the night and watch that beautiful fucking scenery pass me by.

The other night, there was fog covering the top of the mountain, which was lit up from within and silhouetted two trees on the summit in haunting silver light.

I couldn't get that out of my head, so here we are. ☺️

Found this neat leaf on the ground up on Mt. Helix, as well as an odd stone with chipped blue and white paint on it.

I got my first dose of the vaccine yesterday, my arm is a bit sore still but I feel mostly okay.

Mt. Helix Sunrise

The first painting I've made this year, and it's of the sunrise at my favorite view in all of San Diego.

It was absolutely worth staying up to watch the sun come up, and I think I did what we saw justice.

I got to try out the little tabletop easel that I got last week, and it worked well- I can see heavy use for small projects in the future.

"Atop Mt. Helix"

This took about 3 days to complete, partly because my spoons are a bit low at the moment and it's hard to wrangle my motivation to cooperate with me; and partly because I have a bit of a tremor in my hands and it took some serious concentration and patience to render the small details in the background properly.

That being said, I do enjoy how the final product turned out- this is a rendering from memory and imagination of a safe haven for me, a place of peace and quiet and a brief reprieve away from all the chaos; a place where a great many stars seem to have fallen to the earth, and the city lights and radio towers in the distance make one feel comforted and a bit small.

Part of the reason I have for creating art is to give people space to stop and breathe for a while, and I hope I can capture that mountaintop and bring that back down for you.
