Work kept me cooped up, and it's been a week since my last field outing. The Rustic Buntings, Hawfinchs, and Dusky Thrushes that were so numerous every day have completely vanished. Perhaps the warmth of the past few days prompted them to head north. And now, insects are fluttering across the fields! Eastern Pale Clouded Yellow butterflies! Stoneflies! After enduring two harsh months of bitter cold when insects were nowhere to be seen, how utterly dramatic and heart-stirring is the arrival of spring in this cold country. The photo shows Mt. Asama today.
