A beautiful morning for a hike. #mtdiablo #hike (at Walnut Creek, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/BwifqL5H29c/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1d2bo8bhuyrci
Mt. Diablo was once a sacred place of worship by the native inhabitants of California called the Miwok who lived and prayed on this mountain for 5000 years until California was seized by the Spanish and the Miwok were expelled from their ancestral home and religious sanctuary and the European invaders turned the mountain into a military base. This did not sit well with the spirits who the Miwok believed to have resided within the mountain. The spirits who they honored for generations. The Spanish invaders experienced countless paranormal encounters and as a result, they called it the Devil's Mountain aka Mt. Diablo. They say the spirits are still alive and on the mountain but perhaps they've calmed down over the years. In addition to the spiritual significance of the ancient Miwok, it's personally sacred to me and my family because I grew up near the mountain and my grandfather's and uncle's ashes are spread on the mountain. Every time we visit we plant flower seeds in their honor. I brought a bundle of sage and burned some in honor of the Miwok spirits and to Mother Earth and Father Sky, the Great Spirits and the directions just as a form of respect. I saw a Golden Eagle soaring before me as I was burning the sage. The Eagle Spirit is an ancient Native American spirit so that I received as a sign that they were paying attention. I also left a couple of lit cigarettes and poured some bourbon on this rock as a libation to my uncle and grandfather. The bourbon was actually my grandad's favorite and it came from his cabinet which means it's aged pretty well seeing as how he died 11 years ago. We weren't supposed to have alcohol on there and definitely were not allowed to smoke because it's the fire season so I waited until the cigarettes stopped burning after I set them on the rock so that I didn't cause a forest fire on a sacred mountain lol. I had the bourbon in a flask so I was pretty discrete about it. But it was a good visit. #mtdiablo #pagan #ancestors #spiritwork #miwok #nativeamerican #california #nature #natureworship #gaia (at Mount Diablo)
