So, all the Secret Lair stuffs have been revealed.

Setting aside some mixed feelings about forsaken and the ... ‘apologize’ (both wizard’s and mark’s clarification, thus the ‘mixed’), I’m... not as excited, but not completely ready to flip a table or ignore Lair...

It does set a new president. It’s kinda a mixed mess.

Online and not in LGS is a bad thing But print on demand is a good thing Each is 30-40 bucks But each is only a handful of cards There is a first drop for 200 to get all But you if you only want 2 or 3 it might not feel worth it BUT But, if you want 4 or 5, you might as well plunk down the 200 and maybe trade the ones you don’t want? The boxes look interesting and -might- make for dece deckboxes... maybe? that seems to be implied, but there doesn’t seem to be any sort of closing mechanism. Makes me unsure about sticking a commander deck in there. ouside of that, the box feels... a bit much for so few cards.

My thoughts are all over the place on this one. I did organize some short snippet thoughts on my twitter if you wanna check that out.

I am not really sure, in the end how to feel about this. I think I would feel better IF there were also more goodies being sent to LGS. But the lacking support of our game shops is becoming more and more glaring...

Random MtG Thought

Okay, I’m sitting here, sketching a little, reading a little, and debating on going to the corner store for drinks (just ran out of milk for coffee and need sugar, and maybe some drinks not related to java...). And I come upon a thought about MtG’s history.

The Boon Cycle to be specific.

So, the original 5 boons, only one of which survives in standard to this day are: Healing Salve - W: Target Player gain 3 life or prevent 3 dmg Ancestral Recall - U: target player draws 3 cards Dark Ritual - B: add BBB Lightning Bolt - R: Deal 3 dmg to any target Giant Growth - G: Target creature gains +3/+3 til eot

Now, Healing salve was basically the weakest of the bunch, Recall just straight BUHROKEN, Dark Ritual eventually was basically off color for it’s effect, and lightning bolt just this side of too powerful for standard. The only card that persists is Giant Growth.

Now, I would ask this question to Mark Rosewater... But the thing is I feel like it’s something he might not be able to answer either because a) it’s kinda a complicated answer and/or b) because it might be a part of future cards or some such... Or maybe this question (in a sideways fashion) might have already been ‘answered’ through the game. (though really, from what I’ve heard him say in some of his podcasts, I don’t think there are any spells with the same staying power and iconic ‘this is what this color does’ as Giant Growth... One of the things he pointed out was that basically it was in almost every set when they are planning. Even if it is not exactly a reprinting, you can usually find the ‘giant growth’ of the set if you look for it)

Okay, enough faffing about, the question: On a ‘Standard Scale’, if made today, what would be the BOON cycle? That is to say cards already made or possible that would fit in their respective colors that you can get an effect out of a single mana?

(not sure who to tag at the moment cause brain is mash and this is already a messy ramble, might go down to the store and get those drinks now XD)

Idk why but something about the marvel x tcg universes beyond doesn’t feel right to me.

Like I think universes beyond is generally fun, and I know there’s a lot of jarring ones that don’t fit quite right with the rest of magic, but marvel just feels like a line too far to me…

Maybe it’s just because I’m not a huge marvel fan?but introducing a massive IP that feels so far removed from mtg, particularly if they really end up making an entire deck or set themed around spider man just seems a little meh to me.

Lotr yeah that fits 100-% that’s cool

Doctor who? Yeah that kinda fits he fucks around with time and space he could get to the magic universe

Fallout? A bit less fitting but I vibe with it.

Something about marvel specifically just doesn’t feel quite right for magic

The new spoiled cards got me thinking that Magic is really pushing into new design space in the last few sets whether it be vehicles and energy or these dfc land cards with new frames it's really really cool to see. I remember seeing flip cards in Kamigawa and that was envelope pushing and exciting for me! It must be really cool to be a new player seeing all of this flavorful, wonderful and engaging stuff! We are really lucky to play a game that is always looking to experiment and do new things!
