I never found out if this was fake. This is how I picture every gathering at a comic book shop and is exactly why I haven't brought myself to go to a meetup. That, and I'm probably just a mediocre player or worse.
My brother-in-law and I began playing MTG in 2009 when it released on Xbox Live. Or rather, that's when we started playing again. I first started when I was 12 at a summer camp called Rock Mont in the mountains of North Carolina. Back then, I was a little snot. Hated the outdoors that didn't involve real sports *read basketball*. Hating the outdoors wasn't a good mix with that camp when all the activities were outdoorsy. Instead of learning to love it, I skipped almost all of the events with other kids that shared my hatred. Then, BOOM, the MTG matches began. It blew my mind. At the time, I only knew the card game War. Pfft. For me, this was as close to a video game I could get on a table. And I was stoked. Was.
Two weeks pass and I find myself at home with a bunch of cards and a few decks. None of my friends wanted to try it. It was just too damn nerdy for them. One friend tried it. He pretended to fall asleep after my second move. Jerk.
Years passed. Then in 2009, Xbox Live Arcade released MTG. I immediately called my bro-in-law and asked if he'd be interested because he's a nerd like me. He seemed pretty stoked too, so we downloaded and played. We played a lot. We were hooked. But it wasn't enough!
Physical cards were next. Oh, man. Now we gone and done it. That fresh smell you can only experience from opening a pack of MTG cards. Does that smell exist anywhere else?! No, I submit that it does not.
We don't get to play as often as we want right now. He has two little kids, and I'm about to be a dad too. Really, the only obstacle is living 30 minutes apart. My wife and I just built a new house that's literally 5 minutes from them, so we're already planning on getting some games in very soon. I've already started pre-ordering 2014 core cards. Super excited. Also been spending some time playing the iOS version of MTG 2014. If you're on there, look me up as Mellow Ninja on Game Center.
Our first set of matches will be in about two weeks. I'll post a link here. We'll be attempting a live stream. I'm sure you'll make fun of us with our mediocre decks and lackluster skillz.
I'll post my favorite deck later. What decks do you all roll with?
