I first set eyes on Mt. Logan when I crested the southeastern col of Black Peak. I didn't know what it was at the time nor that it was one of the few nonvolcanic Washington peaks above 9,000'. Black Peak is almost there at 8,970', but you still can't jump to be above 9,000. Mt. Logan is a fairly broad massif for a Cascade mountain. I also viewed Mt. Maude for the first time, another 9er. Mt. Perhaps the loneliest approach on a solo climb. The 16-mile approach into Thunder Basin felt extra long when views were scarce.
