THINGS YOU DON'T EXPECT TO FIND YOURSELF GOOGLING WHEN WRITING HARD SCI-FI: "vegan brunch"
I try to include in any depiction of "the future" a couple of things that will make the reader go "... what." but are not particularly explored because they're totally commonplace to the characters. In The Interstellar Tea House it was the elephants. They were just there and nobody ever remarked on the fact that they were... well, elephants (which is in itself kind of a meta-joke). Yrek was introduced to them but only as a species he hadn't met before - how they got to be integrated into society was just going to be left hanging there. Even in my author's notes I only clarified that no genetic engineering had been involved. In the still-untitled story about the Martian Technology Salvage Board, which is a much harder species of sci-fi, the Weird Thing is spicy coffee. Bowen takes hers 'mild' and Aiko likes it 'hot'. Pete hates spicy stuff so he always specifies "no capsaicin". The baristas respond by nodding and saying, "so, mild then." and Pete goes, "no! 'Mild' is not the same as 'none'!"
No Vibe
In the MTSB stories, a background note is that the first five-person mission to Mars, about a century before the events of the story, crashed with a loss of all hands. The second crew had already been launched by then (they went in a pair like Spirit and Opportunity), so NASA had to shrug it off and go on.
Because that is how Mars works.
The MTSB Explores a Lava Tube
BOWEN: "All right, I'm descending into the shaft. Watch the tension and call out every ten feet."
PETE: "Got it. Man, when you think about the forces that create something like this, and how old it is... blows your mind, dude. Right, Suzuki?"
AIKO: *giggling* "She said 'shaft'."
