If you think about it, it's really interesting to see how Hector is pretty much many characteristic ostian traits personified

Of course, if you look at just the game, it all comes as a consequence of the character, but if you look at it with a broader idea

You know how there are many traits we could call 'characteristic' for ostians: pride, trust, military might but also strenght to protect, value of right and wrong, strong mind and heart, and above all honour

seeing all of these it's kinda obvious how they relate to hector, and i suppose it just comes on its own to say "well of course all ostians are like this, Hector is like this and he's the archetypal ostian", but looking at it through the ingame universe you reach a different conclusion:

that Hector is like this because all ostians are, not vice versa.

Which is normal if you think about it: hector wasn't the first ostian, and of course growing up in that environment sure helped him develop such traits, right?

The point is, Hector didn't want to become the archetypal ostian. lol Not that he wanted to be all the opposite either, but my guess is that he didn't really care: not at 9, not at 14, and let alone at 17. My idea is that before he could even make up his mind about it (it would've been easy for a kid to idealize his father and become a fearsome warrior like him or idk something), his parents died. I doubt he got along with nobles as a kid, and I reckon after his parents died it all got worse: a child, left all alone in the middle of this huge castle full of ostian nobles and ostian knights, and all of them looked like strangers to him. I bet he couldn't care less about armors and pride and shit at that moment.

Not about the 'ideal' side of things anyway... Whatever happened to him, sent to school or not, he poured all his efforts in combat. He couldn't care less about etiquette and knighthood and rules, but HE DID care for physical strength. And that's probably about the only thing he cared for until he met Eliwood anyway... That's it! He met Eliwood.

Skipping on all that heart melting friendship stuff I really like, Hector developed a strong sense of loyalty towards Eliwood and generally his friends: he'd go to the end of time in order to protect his friends.

Friendship, loyalty, these are all values no one taught him. He might have grown up in a place that encouraged these traits, but in general he despises ostian nobles and doesn't care for the knightly attitude, not to mention I highly doubt he'd let anyone lecture him on principles, let alone let someone teach him.

But look at him! He is every bit the ostian he is, and without even meaning to. He got physical strenght to hit but also to protect, unwavering trust in his friends, a firm resolve. And he didn't follow any rule, or any written principle, the only thing he probably followed was what his instincts, his heart, told him. Isn't that just so nice how in he who, more than anyone, was likely to turn bitter and lose faith in everything, bloomed those awesome, characteristic values that no one had passed on to him but that he managed to acquire through sheer will

Sure, you could say he got his Ostian blood in his veins, but I doubt he'd have got anywhere hadn't it been for his determination. This just goes to show that you aren't born a Ostian. You become one.
