“May I have this dance, Your Highness?”
Avia startled a bit as she had been completely zoning out. “Oh, of course Hayes!” She let herself be led out onto the dance floor as she returned to reality and realized that it was one of the traditional Whitebridgian dances. “I didn’t realize what dance this was.”
“Is that a problem?” Hayes asked, suddenly concerned and having lost all of the confidence he had rustled up in order to ask her to dance. “We could sit this one out and wait for another song if you’d prefer.”
“No, no!” She waved a hand and let it fall on his arm reassuringly. “I actually have never been asked to dance this before. Honestly, I’ve never been asked to dance period.”
He sighed in relief and gave her one of his signature smirks that she loved so much. “I am honored to be your first. Just promise you won’t step on my feet and we will be great.”
She slapped his arm playfully and took her position to begin the dance. She felt like she should be nervous, but with Hayes around she just couldn’t bother to be. He made everything easier somehow while still managing to make things feel important, to make her FEEL important for being herself instead of a princess. She knew she felt something for him and it was getting harder and harder to convince herself that it wouldn’t be worth it for them to be together.
