The Dessen thing is wild because Dessen was absolutely in the wrong & should directly apologize the student & other authors who played a part should also apologize but now I’m seeing lists of authors who (I’m guessing) saw Dessen’s tweet & didn’t read the article and people responding being like “I’m never reading these authors” and like, I get the anger at the authors some of whom have work I enjoy (like NK jemisin) but it feels like deja vu of tumblr’s attempts to find Unproblematic Fiction™️

And I see what you’re saying, yeah. 

TBH, some of these authors pitch themselves in a certain light, so to see them, without full context, jumping to defend this In-The-Wrong-WW because she’s a friend/colleague/peer/whathaveyou, could easily be souring. Like not “I Wanted This To Be Wholly Unproblematic™️”, so much as “damn this author is not practicing what they preach”.  I understand people not being inclined to buy/rad/support when they’re being loud and wrong like that, lol.

And I mean, given that SD was disingenuous and didn’t give the full quote to begin with, some of them were looking at it as a “YA gets trivialized :(” issue, which is valid and worth talking about. But like, damn ladies, google the context.
