Mud trooper
Name: Mud Trooper
Debut: Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
Mud is delightful isn’t it? I prefer dirt overall, it’s easier to dig around for subterranean buddies in, but you can’t deny that the wetness of mud makes it considerably more convenient to consume. But all that changed when I played Treasure Tracker. I was forced to consider the possibility that mud may not always be full of friends, and can, in fact... be full of FIENDS!
Mud Trooper was basically the closest thing to a zombie in the Mario series before the Chinchos came along. Do those count as zombies? Surely undead mummies and skeletons can both be considered variants of the basic zombie, and logically the combination of the two would as well. But we can’t have zombies in Mario! It’s only okay to show rotten dead guys in this sort of stuff after their flesh has all fallen off! And so, we get moaning mud mounds instead.
But... is that really all they are? They have eyes. They have teeth. They have shoes. They have HAIR! That’s what really gets me uncomfy here. Mud doesn’t have hair! You know what I think? I think these are SORTA zombies. They’re mostly mud, but they picked up some dead guy parts here and there. Don’t judge. I’d do it too if it meant getting my muddy mitts on some bright red cartoon shoes.
Anyway! Mud Troopers will often appear in swarms, and overpower the Toads with numbers, though there are some ways of taking care of them. The headlamp is capable of temporarily melting them, but they can be defeated by certain enemies, such as Chargin’ Chuck! Who I’m now remembering also has a blue hair tuft...
Almost the same color, right down to the gradient! So THIS is what happens to the hair of deceased Chargin’ Chucks! Another one of the Mario universe’s most well-known mysteries, solved!
