Back to school
Our first week back in school is almost 100% tear free. This is because it is dedicated to returning students. The room is set, the environment prepared and we welcome students to come and explore, re-familiarize themselves with the space, materials and, each other. They need to feel settled and ready to welcome new community members into their fold. So there is a lot of wandering, some immediate engagement - this is especially true of those entering their final year in the classroom. They have done this coming back routine before. There is a lot of chatting about the summer gone by, friends who have moved to the Elementary classroom or other schools. Seldom, if at all, do you come across anyone who needs a reminder of the simple processes and procedures in the classroom. It is quite amazing each year to see how quickly they slip into a familiar cycle.
What you do observe is the final year students still a little awkward in their new positions of being the leaders. Sometimes you see them looking around as though searching for their older classmates they used to follow and often get lessons from. There is a slow realization that they are the leaders now. And it will become even more apparent as the new group of 2 1/2 and 3 year-olds start next week! I heard one just turned 4 year old telling his 4 1/2 year old friend, “We are not the new people anymore. We are the old people, right?” ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!!
The mixed age classroom and the 3-year cycle...what a genius Maria Montessori was!
