Enjolras grabbed a blanket off of the couch's armrest and put it gently over the sleeping Eponine. He was willing to let her sleep here, away from the street. He sat on the floor by the couch and let her rest. "Sleep well." He mumbled, staying put by the couch in case she needed something.

Fantine allowed herself to take the details of Eponine’s face in. It was a while before she spoke; Fantine was clearly uncomfortable with the question, but when there was nothing else to lose. nothing else to hide, what use was not giving an answer?

Besides, what could the girl do to her that the world hadn’t already done?

“Because I had an illegitimate daughter and they found out.” How could Fantine know this girl knew Cosette? She couldn’t, and she probably never would. “Satisfied?”

Fantine despised most people who chose to speak to her who weren’t potential customers; she had been the joke of many people— it’s how she ended up here, was it not?

The other girl’s voice pushed her back into the shadows.

You had to give yourself credit for surviving. Giving it to other people meant wasting precious energy on others and that meant dying. “I don’t give anybody credit… you have to think about yourself and yourself alone.”

And wasn’t that the harsh reality for Fantine? Félix had taken what he wanted from her in the name of love and discarded her without even a second thought. “That’s why you don’t fall in love.”

Fantine was a fool once, she wouldn’t be a fool again; whether or not this young girl would share the same philosophy was not Fantine’s responsibility.
