This is the 12th and final month of my New Media Journalism journey. By far, it has been a great journey. The first week began, with the introduction of my Literature Review, then Methodology, followed by Discussion and Conclusion and the final week was our Final Thesis Paper. I honestly had no clue how to begin. However, recounting on my past research activities over the past 11 months made me realize it needed to be done. I would say it was a very daunting task to accomplish inwardly. On the other hand, I believe the way the instructor arranged every part into pieces made it easier to follow and digest. I also believe the feedback and advice from my instructor help me assess the overall project. In retrospect, it gave me the ability to see the things I was not seeing. Moreover, my instructor's advice helped guide me through the process. I am confident that I have acquired a profound knowledge of information and would continue to put them into practice as I continue the next chapter of my Mastery Journey.://spark.adobe.com/page/Xlsynni48HULh/

Multimedia Reporting Mastery Journal

Multimedia Reporting is one of the most interesting courses I have taken. It was interesting to note that most of its characteristics reminded me of Multimedia Development combined with News Production. It also expanded on combining different forms of media to report news stories. I learned through some of the mistakes reporters make during interviews and examined how what they said may be professional or unprofessional. I was assigned to combine image, video, sound, graphics, and text to address a story.

I was given a week to research, write, publish, and share my post on social media. The pressure to get assignments done on time motivated me to accomplish work on time. It was not always a smooth road but one thing I can appreciate is that it taught me through my mistakes. I believe I have learned a lot through some of my mistakes. One thing I appreciated was getting honest opinions from classmates and instructors, which was constructive because it helped me see where I needed to improve. Moreover, I learned that planning and preparing are crucial to every interview.

Multimedia reporting is especially important in our society today with the changing landscape of multimedia publishing and the growing demand for digital media outlets. Opportunities for growth are many, and there are always things to master along the way. Another reason this course is essential to my Mastery journey is for the past years, the multimedia industry has continued to grow. News television stations have now expanded digitally to the web and new developing media channels are steadily growing. The development of new media types and ways to tell stories has emerged through technology and has been quickly growing. As a result, I believe this course has helped prepare me for my journey through the New Media Journalism course.

Multimedia Reporting

Prior to taking the multimedia and reporting class I envisioned this course would be about reporting stories that take place within the media world. For example, Sports Illustrated was sold for $110 million dollars last month. Sports Illustrated is one of the bigger sports media companies in the world. In hindsight this course was more about finding my content niche which happens to be sports but also being open minded to reporting other non sports related stories. In the journalism industry what I am starting to learn is that I have to be versatile. I have to be able to cover stories related to art, music, fashion, science, and entrepreneurship. There are plenty of other areas to cover but I was just using the aforementioned as an example. I also learned all of the articles I produce do not necessarily have to be 300 words or more in length. I can produce an article that contains 75-100 words but still get my main point across to my audience. Inserting short video clips is something else this course has taught me to do in order to make my articles more credible. Credibility is huge in the journalism world because without not too many people will want to read about what I have to say. Discovering what is newsworthy is something this course has taught me as well. Being able to make my stories appeal to other people is something I think I will be able to do a better job of as I continue producing content. I am not a big infographics person but I sort of believe incorporating them into my articles will attract more readers. People love statistics because they state facts. Moving forward as my career as a Full Sail University student winds down I plan on using the techniques I learned in this course. I also plan on using them wherever I end up working after graduation. Incorporating the techniques I mentioned will make me a better journalist. Learning never stops so with that being said I have to continue to incorporating new techniques so I can perfect my craft at the highest level.

Multimedia Reporting Mastery Journal

This course provided several different media methods to produce a story. I thought this course was very beneficial to my success in this industry.

During the first week, I really enjoyed being able to cover a previous story that I had published. For viewers who follow your site, this can be nice for them to see updates on stories that may have interested them. I remember watching talk shows when I was younger, and I always appreciated seeing how guests were doing after the show.

 Taking a look at interviews and finding a good execution style was extremely helpful. The week three discussion board assignment had students selecting a story, and examining how the journalist had done. I reviewed a story that was completely terrible. There were several things that the journalist should have done differently. So I thought this assignment was appropriate, because it really highlights what we should and should not do as journalist.

I think it was also beneficial to examine websites and how they are setup. Although these sites have a huge amount of viewings and have been around forever, it showed me what’s good to incorporate on my site. I was then able to observe my own website and see how user friendly it is which was of great value. From five websites, this provided me with an accurate amount of knowledge in creating the best possible website.

Learning how to get paid is of significant value when having a website. It’s almost like an extra incentive for investing so much time into the work that you like to do.

Overall, I thought this course was great. Really learning how to get viewers to come to my website and keep coming back is what I want. The information provided throughout this course is what I needed to produce great stories on a great website. It was good practice and more insight into journalism.

Multimedia Reporting

Multimedia Reporting gave me a chance to incorporate many of the lessons I’ve learned thus far in New Media Journalism. Each week we were given an assignment to complete utilizing at least three multimedia elements.

Originally, I expected this class to delve more into the different aspects of what multimedia products are, but instead I feel this was more of a hands-on application of how multimedia assignments relate to each other and the end result as a more thorough and intriguing story. 

I learned about poor interviewing techniques and the bad results that come from it. I learned the importance of not holding onto bias when you interview someone and to listen to your interviewee. Because this course required a higher level of journalistic ability, it tested my skills and made me search for material to meet he guidelines. It helped me learn to approach someone and set up an interview and how to interview to create a good product.

Personally, I feel I became more confident and I also think I was faster at knowing what to put together and how they would all fit together. I felt more competent in my skills overall and this helped me react to each assignment with more determination and I noticed my subjects reacted better as a result, they were more laid back and treated me like a professional.

Professionally, I can absolutely use any of the products I made this month to showcase my abilities and will consider using them in a portfolio. I also think that the last assignment helped me professionally by learning how to job search and how to outreach to your future potential employers and also how to conduct research on publications that match your beat well and how to analyze your work to fit into their needs.

Lessons learned in Multimedia Reporting.

This class for me represented the opportunity to use my own judgement to select what multimedia tools would better suit my stories. I appreciated the fact that I could use the ones that I was more comfortable with, instead of having to use a multimedia outlet that I felt, did not suit the story.

Even though I have gotten better at shooting and editing video thanks to the knowledge I have gained in this course, it still isn’t my favorite form of telling my stories. Don’t get me wrong;video is of course, a very powerful form of storytelling, but it’s not one that I manage with ease or the one that I feel works the best for me. I do however, enjoy incorporating compelling and interesting photography into my different stories, accompanied many times by detailed inforgraphics which I have learned to relish as a very clear way of letting the readers see clear and hard data regarding a particular topic.

I also discovered my enjoyment of making audio clips in the form of podcasts that many times included sound bites from my interview subjects, as well as audio slides with pictures that told the story, along with the subject and/or my own personal narration. I was thrilled that I got to make the decisions to incorporate these elements into the stories I wrote in each of the assignments. Tutorials that were provided to us by our instructor through these four weeks, such as “Standards for Multimedia Storytellers” were incredibly resourceful.

In summary, this course was a magnificent opportunity to spread my wings, so to speak as a multimedia journalist. It provided me a unique space to put to use the many things I have learned in previous courses, and finally getting the chance to portray the stories the way I feel work better for my audience. Multimedia Reporting is a course that allows the student to test what he or she has learned in previous months, paving the path to make us much better journalists in each of our specific beats.
