New Media Journalism Final Project: The End Of The Road.
This year has been extremely challenging. Having a full time job combined with the pressure of complex weekly assignments was stressful to say the least. However, every class provided me with a skill that I didn’t have before I started the course. For example, I had only toyed with a blog on Wordpress, but I didn’t really know how to set up a proper website, much less one that appealed to a potential audience.
Furthermore, I never entertained the possibility of shooting and editing my own videos, much less add narration, cutaways and other effects. But this course showed me that not only was I capable of doing so, but that knowing how to work with tools like Adobe Audition and Premiere, iMovie and Soundcloud, would provide me with a unique knowledge that I could use to my advantage when hunting for a job in journalism.
The world of communications is changing every day. The paradigm of how stories are delivered to the public is shifting every day. The New Media Journalism Master of Arts program takes that into account and shows us the best strategies and tools to reach our audience with social media. Adequately utilizing Facebook and Twitter today is not only essential but necessary for the journalist of the XXI century. In a world where news are updated by the second, it is important to have the knowledge not only to compete but also to maintain the highest standards of out profession.
Many people pass themselves off as journalists today, but it’s in self appointed name only. In this course I learned that being a journalist is not just about writing a story, but doing so while upholding certain codes of ethics that every one of us should abide by. This was made obvious to me particularly in the execution of the capstone project in month eleven and the final thesis in month twelve. While the capstone project was the execution of our final multimedia project, the thesis was our “making of”, so to speak. Our chance to narrate step by step, how our capstone project came to be and the different stages we went through to achieve its completion.
While academic writing is not my strong point, I have to say that this last course was the final stepping stone of a long and difficult path. It allowed me to evaluate my project and have the opportunity to leave a written statement saying how it came to be. The tutorials and examples provided on how to do the different chapters were extremely helpful, and without them, completing the thesis would have proved extremely difficult.

In conclusion, it’s been quite a ride. Every single class that I took to complete my MA in New Media Journalism provided me with something different that I will undoubtedly need when working in the field. Ethics, video and sound editing, multimedia reporting and distribution, research, compelling storytelling and academic writing were linked in this program to provide a complete array of important journalism tools. I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to put them to good use and make my professors proud.
