🎏- Super curious about what you can do with what little we've done and what you know. (David please!~)
Sunset was used to being called on these sort of cases. Sudden death, no history of heart failure, or whatever it’d give the accident a tone of inexplicable and magical. Of course, Sunset was not the best detective, but she had the distinct advantage of knowing actual magic like the palm of her hoof. Well, hand, but y’know.
This time, it was hard to determine. There was still a body and a missing limb, of course. But it never seemed like there were other traces to follow. That made it unusual, of course, but it also didn’t fit Sunset’s usual methods. Unless-
She had focused so much on the details that she didn’t realize the jacket that the woman was wearing. Jet-black. Uncommon locally. It reminded Sunset of someone.
Someone that, a day later, she managed to arrange a meeting with. And no sooner did they exchange pleasantries, Sunset showed him a photo.
“Found this body in the woods. No heart failure confirmed, or… anything, really. You know what kind of case they pull me into.“
“So… They’re here, too.“ David gazed, and put one hand to his chin.
“More like their experiments,“ he said, voice raspier than usual, as if it triggered a painful memory. “I didn’t expect to find one out here. Seems like your world is going to deal with more than rogue magic soon enough.“
“You don’t say,“ Sunset deadpanned, crossing her arms. David glanced at her and shrugged.
“I already told you all I could. Any more and Itex is going to come after you too. Then you’ll have my merry band of, debatably, friends. … That sounds less bad when I say it out loud,“ he added, shooting a casual smile at Sunset. She raised an eyebrow.
“Yeah, you used that excuse before. But being in the dark makes my job more of a hassle, you know.“
“I don’t make the rules. But I said I would help however I can. And I kind of owe you one for showing me this. Shows me a bit better what I should be wary about. Speaking of which-“
Sunset knew as soon as she saw the previously concealed sword. She ducked, right on time to hear the whistle of a small projectile zap across the wind near her.
Of course, there wasn’t only one. A barrage zapped across the air towards the other, which just took momentary cover behind an iron bar. Both jumped against each other behind a cement arc whereupon the statue of an unicorn was over.
“Again!?“ Sunset complained in a whisper. The other worried more about loading his gun.
“Beggars can’t be choosers, can they… You have a tome?“
“What a badass,“ David deadpanned, before opening and closing his hand with force. A vortex appeared by Sunset’s brow, but she didn’t get alarmed. When it was gone, she felt the all familiar horn right in place, just as it would in Equestria.
“OK, now. Cause a distraction.“ David said, nodding.
In response, Sunset’s magic flared through her horn, and multiple claps of thunder roared and struck seemingly out of nowhere. The sounds of pain or startling came by the dozen. Also, a fire started on the patches of grass nearby.
“A distraction isn’t usually a forest fire,“ David remarked, peeking out of cover to see the results.
“What, you’re gonna tell Smokey on me? Just go and do something, will you?“
With that, both left cover from different angles, and struck as thunder.
So much so that the blinding light made it difficult to see the result.
