Let's just put it out there - breastfeeding in public is intimidating as hell.

During pregnancy, when I decided that I would like to try breastfeeding, if my body and baby connect, I never considered how hard it actually is to do so in public. The most natural act in human evolution and development, practiced for thousands if not millions of years, by all mammals, and I felt scared. Scared of being embarrassed or humiliated by the outer public, for giving my baby a great start in life. The sole reason behind that being the sexualisation of breasts throughout time. As we all know, you're more likely to hear 'nice tits, love', than 'well done for feeding your child'.

First days/weeks, I tried to synchronise feeding, so it happened just before going out. God forbid stopping and soothing my hungry baby with a warm, friendly breast. Nuhuh. Even doing it in front of close and loved ones felt embarrassing, like I should rush it and be done. However, nursing became more natural; I found Theia cooperating more with different positions and I managed to cover up better, for more comfort. I took myself for a walk in the park, chose a bench and fed my baby. I strategically chose a bench in the far corner, but then realised half of Portsmouth walked past it - mothers, school children, men, just bloody everybody. And I did it with pride.

Today, I went to a restaurant for lunch with a lovely friend of mine, and nearly 5 weeks into motherhood, I didn't even think twice. I picked up my squealing, hungry babe, positioned her well, covered up so I looked tasteful whilst doing so, and then I carried on with lunch and my conversation. It felt right and perfect. I guess even the most natural things in life need a little helping hand.

And now, after building enough confidence, if somebody did try to shame me or give me a funny stare, I would tell them exactly where to go, and trust me, it's not a nice place!

The look of true love; you hear all the time that the love between mother and child is nothing you've ever had before and it couldn't be more true. The bond I have with my little girl is unbreakable, it doesn't matter what happens in our lives, the love I feel for my daughter will never change and will fix everything. Today I got my daughter a place at nursery and i'm so excited for her to start so she can start spending time with other children her age. We've got some amazing people in our lives with beautiful children that lily loves playing with and I'm very fortunate to have younger siblings that Lily adores but it will be good for her to have a regular visit to nursery to get used to being with people she's not close to. Everytime we drive past the primary school by her house she gets excited and tells me she's going there to read a book so starting nursery will be great for her!
