“Miss Walker, take a seat.” Ms. O'Donnell said flatly when Blake walked through the door, pulling her headphones down to sit around her neck and pausing her cassette player. She begrudgingly headed towards the far side of the room by the windows, slipping her backpack from her shoulder and dropping it to the floor. She slid into the seat and sighed.
“To say I’m disappointed to see you here is a grave understatement.” She said, looking at Blake over her glasses. Blake shifted in her seat, clenching her jaw. “I’d expect more from you-”
“I didn’t do anything!” She snapped before she could stop herself, and Ms. O'Donnell raised an eyebrow.
“Sorry I’m late,” A voice suddenly sang from the door, and she turned to find a familiar face sauntering in. “I hope you didn’t start without me, Ms. O'Donnell.”
“Sit down, Munson.” Ms. O'Donnell said with a tone of impatience, getting up from behind the desk as he took a seat a few rows away. “I trust you don’t need babysitting today-” She snapped her fingers. “Feet off the desk!”
Blake found herself smiling at him as he slipped his feet off the desk, holding his hands up and settling back into his seat.
“I’ll be back.” Ms. O'Donnell said, giving them a final stern look before leaving the classroom. Blake watched her leave, frowning with confusion.
“Where is she going?” She asked, turning her attention to Eddie who was already looking at her.
“You expect her to just hang around?” He asked, and she looked down at her hands in her lap.
“How do they know we won’t just leave?” She asked, and Eddie chuckled.
“You sound like you’ve never been in detention before.” He said, and Blake looked up at him. He considered her for a moment, narrowing his eyes, then grinned. “You’ve never been in detention before?” He asked, and Blake shrugged. He chuckled, leaning his elbow on the desk and resting his chin in his hand.
“Well, I'll be damned. What’re you in for?” He asked, and Blake huffed a laugh, shaking her head.
“Total misunderstanding.” She said, and he tilted his head a little. “You?” He shrugged.
“Total misunderstanding.” He retorted and she narrowed her eyes at him, the corner of her lips tugging upwards. She found herself looking down at her hands in her lap once more, suddenly feeling… shy.
Sure, Eddie was cute. If she was being honest with herself, he was more than cute. Gorgeous, even. He had these big dark eyes that frankly threatened to hold her in a chokehold if she looked too long, these adorable dimples and soft lips that-
She inhaled sharply. He was cute. That's all.
Eddie was nervous as all hell, being left alone with Blake Walker of all people. He was sure she was the most beautiful girl he’d ever seen, with dark hair and bangs that slightly curled into her face, intense green eyes surrounded by a speckle of freckles and gorgeous pink lips.
He’d spent years feeling completely invisible to her, simply admiring her beauty from afar when they passed each other in the hall. Being held back, he’d found himself in her classes this year, and he'd risk a glance her way whenever he got the chance.
She was beautiful, unbearably so, and he’d seen the way the other guys in the school looked at her. He didn’t like it. He was jealous. She had the most infectious smile he'd ever seen, and the most adorable laugh.
And she'd never so much as looked his way.
“So this… misunderstanding,” He said suddenly, pulling Blake’s attention to him by getting out of his seat and wandering over to the desk in front of her. “What happened, exactly?” He asked, straddling the seat and leaning his forearms on the back.
She sat up a little straighter, thinking back to the incident that landed her in detention. “It’s stupid,” She said, and he tilted his head. She held his gaze, reluctant to share her story, but he raised his eyebrows in waiting and the corner of his lips turned up slightly - so, she told him.
She was minding her own business, walking through the hall during her free period when these sophomores flew around the corner, running right for her. One of them tossed her a can of spray paint, which she caught in utter confusion and watched them run down the hall and round another corner. She’d stood dumbfounded, examining the can when Mr. Mundy found her and assumed she was the guilty party he was looking for. He’d told her to follow him, and he led her down the hall to a locker that had the word freak sprayed on the door. She’d swallowed thickly, knowing exactly whose locker it was.
“He didn’t believe me,” she said. “So… here I am.” Eddie hummed for a moment, and grinned.
“You’re right, that is stupid.” She smiled, leaning her forearms on her desk.
“And you? What was your misunderstanding?”
“Oh, same kinda thing, really.” He says, waving his hand flippantly. “Ms. O’Donnell threw me in here 'cause I didn't have my homework.” Blake snorts.
“That is not the same thing!” She says, and Eddie laughs.
“Sure it is!” He argues. “She thought I didn’t have it because I forgot it or something, but in reality, I didn’t have it because I didn’t do it.” Blake laughs heartily, and Eddie watches her, smile wide and eyes damn near twinkling.
"Y'know," he says. "We've been in classes together all year, but I think this is the most we've ever talked." She hums.
"I think you're right." She smiles. "It's nice." He chuckles.
"Nice," he says, looking out of the window. "That's new."
"What, would you prefer freak?" She teases, and he glances at her, tilting his head.
"That's what they all call me," he says, adding dramatically with wide eyes, "So it must be true!" She giggled, and found herself wondering why the hell they'd never really spoken before. He wasn't this freak that people made him out to be; sure, he was quirky, a little wild. But he was nice. He was sweet.
"People have you all wrong, don't they, Munson?" She asks softly, and his smile falls a little, before making a face and shrugging.
"Doesn't matter." He says, resting his chin in his hand.
Of course it does, she thought, but said nothing. He looked down at her walkman, and tapped it with his ringed fingers.
"So," he said. "What kind of music is the lovely Miss Walker into, hm?"
Lovely?
"Uh," she pauses. "A little of everything, I guess." He hummed.
"And what are we listening to today?" He asked, the corner of his lips turning up. She found herself returning the gesture, before pulling her headphones from around her neck, and leaning forward to place them over his ears. He held them in place with his fingers and she pressed play, hearing the muffled chords of Everybody Wants To Rule The World. He made a face, lifting the headphones away from his ears.
"Tears For Fears?" He said. "Really?" She snorted.
"Don't tell me you're above Ronald and Curt?" He sighed dramatically, removing the headphones completely and handing them back.
"What about real music, Walker?" He asks, leaning closer and narrowing his eyes at her as she pushes the stop button. "Metallica, Iron Maiden, Scorpions?" She raised her eyebrows at him, and he gawked at her.
"Black Sabbath?" She pressed her lips together. "Mötley Crüe?" She shrugged, and he threw himself back, faking a cry of pure agony. She couldn't stop herself from laughing, and he covered his face with his hands.
"Truly just a pretty face, after all." He said, voice muffled behind his fingers.
"Hey!" She snapped, reaching over to hit his arm playfully. He dropped his hands from his face and grinned at her.
"I'm kidding," he clarified, and she smiled. He chuckled, and looked out of the window again. She watched him for a moment, noticing his long eyelashes and how soft his features were.
"You think I'm pretty?" She asks, and he looks at her.
"I mean…" He rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah." Blake felt heat rise to her cheeks and she tried to hide her smile behind her hand, and he chuckled nervously.
"Hey, uh," he said, leaning forward onto the back of the chair again. "Do you-"
"Alright, you two." Mr. Mundy interrupted Eddie as he walked into the room. "Time's up."
“Already?” Eddie asked, and Mr. Mundy sighed heavily.
“Yes, already. Ms. O'Donnell has been called away so you’re off the hook for today.” Eddie sighed, his head hanging a little. “Is there a problem, Mr. Munson?” He snapped as Blake grabbed her bag and walkman.
“Nope.” He said under his breath, desperately trying to ignore the disappointment curling around his gut. He wanted more time with her. Needed more time. He never thought he'd really have a chance with someone like Blake - beautiful, popular, smart and funny - but she was cool, and he wanted to see her again. Get to know her, talk to her more.
"I don't want to see you here again, Miss Walker." Mr. Mundy said. "If I see any more graffiti around the school, I know where to come looking." Blake said nothing as she passed the desk.
"I have no doubt I'll see you again soon, Munson." He said, his tone sharp. Blake stopped at the door, waiting for Eddie, stifling a laugh as he walked by Mr. Mundy with a sarcastic smile and batted his eyelashes.
"Can't wait," he drawled, and followed Blake into the hall where they walked side by side.
"That was a lot more fun than I expected it to be," she says after a few moments, cutting through the silence and he looks down at her.
"I still can't believe you've never been in detention." He said, and she giggled.
"We can't all be bad boys like you." She says as they push the doors open to step outside, and Eddie laughs as he digs into his pocket for his cigarettes. He pulls one out, holding the pack to her.
"No thanks," she says, and he sticks a cigarette between his lips, pulling out his lighter and flicking the end. She watches as the cigarette burns and he takes a drag, blowing it out and shoving his lighter back into his pocket. She realised she'd been staring at him, and quickly looked away.
"Blake?" Eddie said, bringing her attention back to him. "This was cool. Hanging out, I mean." She couldn't help the smile that spread across her lips and she tucked her hair behind her ear.
"Yeah," she says. "It was." He offered her a sweet smile, dimples and all, and she was startled to find her heart skipping a beat.
Jesus, was she crushing on Eddie Munson?
He licked his bottom lip and took another drag.
"You wanna do it again some time?" He asks, blowing out the smoke.
“Detention?” She asked playfully, and Eddie snorted.
“No,” He said, full of amusement. “You know what I mean.”
"I know," She smiled. “I’d love to.” He looked as though he was trying desperately not to smile, but he was failing miserably.
"Cool." He eventually said, and silence filled the air once again as Eddie flicked the ash off his cigarette. She tried to think of something, anything to say; butterflies swarmed in her stomach, and she couldn’t quite believe that Eddie Munson of all people was having this effect on her.
"Alright, well, I'll see you later." He said finally, kicking a stone with his shoe and bringing his eyes back to her. Her breath caught in her throat at the sight of those god damn big, brown eyes, and words failed her so she simply nodded. He began to walk backwards, offering her one last winning smile before turning away.
She let out the breath she didn’t realise she was holding, and inwardly kicked herself.
Smooth, Blake. Real smooth.
