Hi :) I'm a high school senior that's really having a hard time deciding between colleges, and Miami of Ohio is one of my top three. I was just wondering, since there is that whole stereotype of preppy girls, hardcore parties, drinking everywhere, and a big party school, what was your experience? I've visited campus several times and love the programs I'm looking at, but I'm not a huge partier and I'd be an Honors Scholar. I like reading and Avengers and Firefly and the like, will Miami fit me?
Hi! :) If I’m being completely honest here, there is A LOT of partying here. My roommate is out every night with people, and most of the people here party. Something like 1/3 of the whole student body are in fraternities/sororities, and almost all of the girls you will see look nearly identical. I’m going to get that out of the way, because what you’ve heard in that regard is definitely true. It’s called J.Crew U for a reason, and it certainly lives up to the name.
However! I think there’s other stuff to do, as long as you don’t mind that it’s based a lot on finding other people to hang out with. This was a big downside for me, because the location being in the middle of nowhere is really, really frustrating; I wanted to be able to go to concerts and movies and things. But as far as people go, all the people I’ve met on the Quidditch team are awesome and super nice, and tons of people definitely have Tumblr- for Fandom reasons. There are lots of clubs here full of people that have interests besides drinking and partying. I think you’d definitely be able to find people who you relate to. I’m in the Celebrate the Arts dorm, and I’m mutual followers on here with a few cool people who live down the hall. But yes, every night (and especially on weekends) there are lots of preppy-types being loud and very drunk. They mostly stay Uptown, until they’re heading back home.
In regards to Honors (as I’m in the Honors program, too) I think it’s really nice here. You get first pick of scheduling (after the Seniors, anyway) and you get to take different classes that non-Honors students don’t. And the requirements seem honestly a lot more interesting than the Miami plan. You will have to do extra assignments in classes where only half are designated “honors,” and they’re usually just busywork, because professors apparently feel like they have to make you do extra work.
Do you have any idea what your major will be? There’s some that Miami does really, really well and others that might be a tough fit, which was the mistake I made. This school wasn’t really the right fit for me personally- I’m an art major, but I want to do Illustration, and they only offer Graphic Design or Studio art, with no real in-between or wiggle room for side interests. It’s very traditional in that way, a lot of more modern studies aren’t covered here. But most of the departments do a really great job. Also, Miami does a really nice job of helping you pay for school, by applying for a lot of scholarships for you - something that a lot of schools don’t do. And the food service is really awesome.
That was really long. But I hope I answered your question!
Miami University
Hey everyone! I'm almost positive that I'm going to be attending Miami University next fall as a freshman! If anyone on here is also considering it feel free to message me! I'd love to get to know some future redhawks!
