Merlin, he hated rounds. It was always the same. Lily would take the more interesting parts of the castle, and then he was left to explore the darker, slightly more sketchy corridors. Granted, he often found himself drawn to those places when he was in the company of his friends. But, alone, he’d much rather be expected to go around the Great Hall and kitchens, tell off a few Hufflepuffs for being out of bed, confiscate the snacks they took from the kitchen, and then continue on his way.
But no. He had to give those jobs to Evans, who wouldn’t even eat the food that she took away. Which, talk about a waste. Damn him and the fact that he was experiencing feelings for her again. Typically, this part of the job wasn’t even that amusing. He’d just have to break up a few horny fifth and sixth year Slytherins, and then head off to make sure that Peeves wasn’t going to destroy anything. And, if he wasn’t, convince him to. Literally the worst way to spend his nights.
The sound of the moaning was enough to tell James to get ready to see something he really didn’t want to. Despite what his friends might have thought, it wasn’t his favorite thing whenever he caught kids shagging in the corridors and had to break them up. Especially when they were too far along and he had nothing to do but wait it out before sending them off to Slughorn.
But what he saw wasn’t what he expected. Kneeling down next to the younger girl, James ran a hand through his hair. Book beside her, it was obvious that there was something she had been studying before falling asleep. Upon closer inspection, he knew it was something far darker than Hogwarts taught, so he shut it and slipped it into his bag to return to the library in the morning. Even in the dim glow of the firelight, James could tell that her face was twisted, almost as though she was in pain. Her breathing was coming out in gasps, punctuated by the moans he had been hearing.
“Carrow,” he muttered. No response. Reaching down, James shook her, careful not to let her hit her head on the stone floor. “Carrow.” His voice was louder the second time, and it seemed to do the trick. Withdrawing his hand, James tried to smile at her as her eyes fluttered open. “Don’t know how you did it, but you fell asleep out here.” Pushing himself up into a standing position, James extended a hand to help her up. “Come on, I’ll walk you back to your common room.”
