Americaner response?
Huh?
Eww
*takes notes*
Not American
Chiwetel Ejiodor’s Solomon Northup was among other things, a heroic struggle of a great actor over his British Accent. A few other times when “furiners” sounded “murican”.
Daniel Day Lewis in Lincoln. D: (2012). Previous actors playing The Great Emancipator used the same voice – generic somber. The Irish-British Day-Lewis found the midwesterner in Lincoln as well as the humor so he could play him as relaxed – or as relaxed as a man trying to find a way to keep his country together could be.
Christian Bale in Batman Begins. D: Christopher Nolan (2005). This Brit didn’t just master a creditable American accent in this superhero origin story. He invented the BATMAN accent.
Ruth Negga in Loving. D: Jeff Nichols (2016). Mildred Loving, the black woman who, with her husband challenged Virginia anti-miscegenation laws was a southerner and Negga, an Irish-Ethiopian nailed a southern accent, getting to the heart of the Loving’s case, which was both about their right to have her marriage recognized and whether they could return to the only home they knew.
Heath Ledger in Brokeback Mountain. D: Ang Lee (2005). Almost a cheat, considering how taciturn Ennis del Mar is. But as the Wyoming cowboy passionately in love with another man, Ledger’s inarticulate groping towards his feelings betrays not a hint of his native Australia. And at the end when he simply says “Jack I swear…” he puts all the west’s loneliness into it.
Bel Powley in The King of Staten Island. D: Judd Apatow (2020). I’ve only seen this British up-and-comer in a few things but in this touching comedy she doesn’t just play an American, or a New Yorker. She plays a Staten Island girl with, by all accounts, a perfect accent. Keep an eye on this one. I don’t think we’ve heard the last of her.

Sometimes I like to tell myself that American stereotypes are false, but then I remember that my theater class literally warms up by dancing to the Cotton Eyed Joe...
