kitty and julie grew up together, inseparable and rarely seen apart. their mothers joked they were "two missing halves." kitty, though always quick-witted and striving for excellence, wasn't as cold as she is now. she trusted people, especially julie.

but their childhood friendship shattered after a sleepover at julie's house, the night kitty lost faith in the world—or at least in men. when kitty found the courage to speak about what happened, word spread, and julie made it her mission to destroy kitty's credibility.

eventually, kitty's family moved to lima for a fresh start. the sleepover changed her in ways she can't discuss yet, but the breakup with her best friend is something kitty never really processed or got over. she struggles to trust and prefers to be feared rather than liked. those who see her emotional side are rare, and that's by careful design. love, even as friendship, is a risk, and for kitty, that risk has to be worth it.
