Something's wrong.
She can feel it in her horns, plainly as she can feel the shift in the air that preludes a storm. Plainly as she feels the ground beneath her feet where she leaves her scratch marks. Plainly as she can feel the stares of fear and disdain from the other Sentinels, the other beasts, that remind her she's not like them. Not really.
She's known it since she woke up here. Known it just as well as she knew him. Even with his armor, even with the blood, and sweat, and viscera of demons that coated him after battle. She knew it as well as she knew his scent, the feel of his heavy gloves against her head, the weight and rhythm of his footsteps as he approached and the warmth of him that seeped through his suit when he rested himself against her side. She knew him, just the same as he knew her.
And this wasn't him.
She comes when called, just as she always does. She always answers to him and no one else. But she stops short of greeting him with a gentle press of her armored head like she usually. Because it's not him. Not really. And she knows it. It looks like him. It smells like him. It walks and moves and fights like him. But it isn't.
For that reason, she lingers just a beat too long. Her jaws part with a rumbling growl that any other would find menacing. He never has - always able to placate her with a gentle hand and the knowledge that no matter how fussy she can appear, she'd never turn that fury on him. But he doesn't even do that. And it only solidifies her certainty.
Something is definitely wrong.
