Museum curators made a global appeal Monday for photos and stories about the millions who fought for the British empire in World War I as they launched an ambitious new digital memorial. The Imperial War Museum in London has put the records of 4.5 million men and more than 40,000 women who served with the British army overseas on a new website, \"Lives of the First World War\". \"Everybody can contribute to Lives of the First World War, whether they choose to simply remember someone online, upload a picture from their family album, share a story passed down through generations, or connect official records to build a full and factual picture of what happened to that person throughout the war,\" said Luke Smith, who is leading the project at the museum. This post-modern fantasy follows one Billy Harrow: a curator who finds his museum's prized specimen (a massive preserved squid embryo) suddenly vanishes during a guided tour. This event leads Billy into a dark and arcane underworld of London where strange apocalyptic cults all seem to have a vouched interest in finding the missing mollusk. Mieville's prose in this book is not as clunky as it can be in some of his other works. He is also very clearly in his element writing this gritty magic-filled world full of quirky and at times horrifying characters. Likewise, the Lovecraftian element predominating the work shines through effectively as would be expected about dark cults worshiping massive cephalapods. However, the twist ending at the end of the book leaves one wanting and comes off as rushed. While at times this work is a bit haphazard and though the ending falls flat, I still consider this to be a very good read. Mieville delivers the paranoid and obtuse beliefs of the various cults with a precision indicating a clear familiarity with similarly manic beliefs. All of his weird yet clever correspondences and symbolism leave the reader in a state of dark reverie. All of the magic in this world comes off as practical rather than fanciful and the power it entails is like that from a nuclear generator: intense and full of a potential to wipe out entire cities. For those looking to immerse themselves in the inky darkness of the counter-cultural fantasy genre, I highly recommend this strange but satisfying book.
