Isaac Asimov is one of the most important and prolific science fiction writers of all time. His body of work has led the way for generations of science fiction writers, filmmakers and more.

This virtual event, presented in partnership with the Enoch Pratt Free library, features a pair of community readings of two of Asimov’s most popular short stories and a presentation by Hugo-nominated author Alec Nevala Lee to help us better understand Asimov himself and his works.

3:00pm Community Reading: The Last Question (1956)

4:00pm Presentation with author Alex Nevala-Lee

Join Hugo nominated author Alec Nevala-Lee for a discussion of the significance of two of Asimov’s most well-known short stories. We will explore themes and interpretations of the pieces and how they reflect Asimov’s beliefs on faith, technology, and science. Nevala-Lee will also provide insight into Asimov’s life, career, and how his legacy has evolved over the last century.

If you are interested in reading a section from either The Last Question or Nightfall, please register as a reader for the event via our website here. You do not need to register separately to attend the event; your registration as a reader will also cover your registration as an event attendee.

After completing your registration, you will receive an automated email with additional information. If you do not receive this email within 10 minutes of registering, check your junk folder, and then contact Laura Grant, Program Assistant at [email protected].

This email will contain a link where you can view the reading selections for both The Last Question and Nightfall. Please refer to the provided copies of the stories when choosing which reading you would like. Readings are on average about a page in length.

After you have reviewed the readings, please fill out this Google form also included in the email to select your preferred reading. In order to encourage wide participation, please sign up to be a reader for only one of the stories. Readings are available on a first come first serve basis. As part of this form, you will also be asked to select a date at which you are able to participate in a required tech test. Please make sure you have access to a webcam, microphone, and device on which you can participate in a webinar via Zoom prior to this tech test and on the day of the event.

Once you submit the form, your participation as a reader and your reading selection will be confirmed via email within 3 business days.
