I feel like book/movie fans are very different from musical fans. Many of the musicals fan haven't even read the book LOL which is fine but I feel like at times they dismissed things from the book because it's not in the musical or saying that the musical is better or that the actors in the musicals are better. It just feels very disrespectful and like they highjacked the fandom. And I love the musical but it can't never replace the love I have for the book. I was watching an interview with the director of the musical and she talked about how she didn't even read the book or watch the movie and like yeah it shows

the musical shouldntve cut out randy and reduced steve to one line. both of them were important characters (steve showing that ponyboy is an unreliable narrator + his friendship with soda and THE CAR SCENE WITH RANDY HELLO???)

the musical and musical fandom are pretty bad. wish they'd stop tagging their fics and posts as 'the outsiders' and just use the musical tags here and on ao3. it's too different from canon in huge ways to the point that it never reads or feels the same.

and if you're saying "i can enjoy the outsiders without the book!" i assume you just are too lazy to read.

hey, so listen, I'm very happy that the outsiders musical exists because I think that this fandom deserves to have more content than just a book+movie released more than 40 years ago + bits and pieces of information, but I also don't like it for many reasons and I'm going to tell you why.

1. the way they did some of the relationships between the characters. dallas and johnny were probably the main victims of that, their dynamic was just turned upside down, and instead they decided to focus on ponyboy and johnny... that "the only reason I'm living is you" meanwhile dallas literally went ahead and pulled a kms after johnny was no longer there. oh yeah.....

2. that weird ass obsession of theirs with making every single duo existing into a sibling dynamic?? as if a relationship between two people cannot be anything else. at least one year age gap is necessarily an older&younger brother, and I just DON'T GET IT. I'm pretty sure we've got enough siblings already. and then you have people calling you an incest shipper. fucking hell.

3. the amount of characters they just made up on point, instead of giving some screen time to already existing characters like steve and two-bit. we know who that is, right?.... right????..... I'm not against new characters, but they do realize it needs to be balanced too??

uh, that's all I could remember. otherwise I've got nothing to complain about. visuals and music are AMAZING, thank you. wish we've had a solo Sky song, though.
