Good evening!

This is the confession blog made for the discussion of any media related to The Outsiders, originally a novel written by S.E. Hinton in 1967. Decided to make one since all of the existing were inactive for at least 3 years or so.

Rules:

1. No name-dropping in negative context. We don't want any people to be targeted, bullied, or doxxed. Mentioning people is allowed, just don't describe it too obviously. This includes reblogs and comments too.

2. No overly explicit topics. Vague mentions of violence/NSFW is fine, not with underage characters though (includes Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas, Steve, Sodapop, Steve, Cherry, Curly, etc.)

3. Confessions should be somehow related to The Outsiders of any media or the fandom, whether it's about this blog or just general fandom.

4. The takes sent do not represent the personal opinion of the moderator. Normally we will not delete any of the confessions by your requests unless it breaks the rules.

I feel like Darry is completely misinterpreted and trashed by half the fandom for no good reason. They make it seem like he is some abusive, cruel guy when he is really just someone who is barely leaving adolescence that has no one to guide him into adulthood and is working really hard to take care of his family.

It seems to me that when he slapped ponyboy everyone's family trauma sniffers pounced because the majority of the people who read the outsiders were the same age if not younger than ponyboy and would therefore have the exact same problem with understanding darry. HE IS NOT ABUSIVE AND HE IS NOT THE BAD GUY. not only was it specifically stated that he never hit pony before which, if you have any siblings, you KNOW how rare and saintly that is. he also CHOSE to throw away his future and way out of the neighborhood (something both him and his parents have always dreamed about so he could have a better life) for the time being to take care of his little brothers when he could have JUST AS EASILY ABANDONED THEM.

but what they dont understand is that darry would NEVER abandon his brothers and that is integral to his character. The reasons he is so "cruel" (which he isnt) or tough on pony is because 1) the state could take his brothers away at the drop of a hat so to keep all three of them together and avoid subjecting them both to the horrors AND I MEAN HORRORS of the 60s tulsa foster system he needs to keep pony out of trouble 2) he REALLY loves his brothers and wants the best for them and would want to keep pony out of trouble even if the threat of foster care wasnt looming over them and 3) THIS IS BASICALLY A TEEN WHO HAS HAD THE WEIGHT OF THE WORLD THRUST UPON HIS SHOULDERS. his parents died when he was probably 19 and just about to go into the world and find himself and who he wants to be. instead he not only had to deal with unimaginable and oppressive grief of losing his parents but he also had no time to grieve because he immediately had to fight to keep pony and soda alongside picking up one of the MOST PHYSICALLY DEMANDING AND TAXING jobs ever and trying to keep his brothers fed clothed and safe.

i know that a lot people who read the outsiders are like 12 but understand that 19 and even 20 are NOT OLD AT ALL. you still feel like you have no idea what you are doing and you still feel like a teenager/kid. Talk to any adult in your life and they'll tell you they knew nothing at that age and didnt become properly mature and knowledgable about the world until their mid to late twenties if even then. still, darry takes on all this responsibility because HE LOVES HIS BROTHERS FULLY AND COMPLETELY in a way rarely found in the world. so excuuuuuse him if he is crabby after the absolute nightmare his life crumbled into NOT EVER A YEAR AGO. i mean, remember how crabby you are when you're tired or haven't eaten? well, darry's day to day feels much worse than that and he has no time to recuperate and center himself because of his endless list of responsibilities. so please for the LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY STOP DOGPILING ON HIM AND TREATING HIM LIKE HE IS SOME SATAN SPAWN HELLBENT ON TORTURING PONY. HE IS DOING MUCH BETTER THAN MOST ANYONE ELSE WOULD DO IN THAT SCENARIO AND ONE MOMENT OF FEAR AND LOSS OF CONTROL SHOULD NOT DEFINE HIM.

I’m sorry but like WHO TF IS EVIE??? IS SHE CANON?? DID I MISS SOMETHING?! She wasn’t in the book or movie. Apparently she’s dating Steve and in deleted scenes but wouldn’t that make her a scraped character? And I did some digging and she’s from another book and movie. (Please correct me if I’m wrong)

I have no idea what’s going on in the musical part of the fandom rn, a lot of people are hating on it and I just don’t see why. maybe because I don’t interact with it I hate musicals why is there so much discourse and separation in this fandom all the sudden Or is it just now getting popular?

could you stop tagging negative musical posts with the musical tag? it’s getting kinda annoying -you have the negative tag why do you need to put it in the tag musical fans actually use?

You mean the general #the outsiders musical one? Sometimes I just do it automatically, sorry. I see a lot of musical fans expressing negative opinions about the book/movie too+still tagging it, so I don't really see a problem with that.

I feel like book/movie fans are very different from musical fans. Many of the musicals fan haven't even read the book LOL which is fine but I feel like at times they dismissed things from the book because it's not in the musical or saying that the musical is better or that the actors in the musicals are better. It just feels very disrespectful and like they highjacked the fandom. And I love the musical but it can't never replace the love I have for the book. I was watching an interview with the director of the musical and she talked about how she didn't even read the book or watch the movie and like yeah it shows

For the anon that asked what a JD looks like, JD stands for juvenile delinquent so just search juvenile delinquent 1960s you'll get a lot of great examples. For tim and curly there's a movie for that was then and this is now, I like the actors that they use for them and angela but I really like the actor that portrays tim in the tv show he's like my perfect tim (I'm sorry for the actor in the movie but doesn't look like what I picture tim to look like at all LOL)

I fucking hate Sylvia in this fandom. No, she is not ur favorite greaser girl??? What the hell r u even talking about?? Literally all we know abt her is that she cheats on dallas (MULTIPLE TIMES if I'm remembering correctly) and that ponyboy doesn't like her. I cannot understand any variant of Johnny, Pony, and Dally being shipped. Like, I can see the vision, but man, it does not speak to me. This is especially odd because I do not interact with the musical (which is apparently more platonic? idk haven't seen it). Something about shipping the three of them in any capacity rubs me the wrong way personally. I can't put my finger on what though. I have nothing against anyone who does ship them, but I just can't jive with it for some reason.
