Learning with Technology in Music Education

  “Music feeds in to so many other areas of a person’s life and a person’s learning. It improves your social and personal skills, it builds confidence, and working in a group, such as a band or ensemble, it encourages cooperation between people” Benjamin Northey – Australian Conductor

  Music allows students to use their imagination and creativity and we, as teachers, need to provide students with the tools to enable them to express themselves through music. As Benjamin Northey comments, “Kids learn best when they are involved in what they’re learning, when they’re actually experiencing it first hand” (Northey, 2013, as cited in ACARA, 2013). Therefore, we need to provide students with a diverse range of experiences that they can participate and engage in.

  Northey comments that music today is a much more diverse experience of art than it has ever been (Northey, 2013, as cited in ACARA, 2013). During our tutorial we explored this concept, and discussed how to incorporate technology when teaching music. With technology becoming more prominent, it is important for teachers to embrace emerging technologies (Mattson, n.d., p. 2). Incorporating technology also gives students a whole different way to experience music (Friant, 2013, as cited in Osseo Area Schools, 2012).

  Resources for Teachers:

Apps: Apps, for example Garage Band, Percussive, Latin Percussive, Audacity, Sibelius, and Finale, are an effective way in which technology and music can be incorporated. These apps allow students to experiment with, create and share music.
