Really enjoyed the Music Management seminar last night with Steve Leeds interviewing author Stephen Witt. If any of you have downloaded music in a not so legal way, suggest you check out his book, "How Music Got Free" all about "the one man who destroyed the music industry to put rims on his car" @musicbiz101wp #musicmanagement #howmusicgotfree #napster #limewire #musicmanagement #musicpiracy #digitaldownloads #freemusic (at William Paterson University)
Ethical Design (Change The Record)
I created a campaign about an ethical subject I believe to be an ever-growing issue nowadays that I am passionate about. My campaign, which raises awareness and presenting the harsh reality of music piracy, is titled ‘Change The Record’. This is a play on words relating to the playing of music but also referring to changing your actions.
The campaign is a series of posters communicating the negative effects of illegally downloading music, which will be placed in locations people are likely to be listening to music such as public transport or in mediums which will be seen by fans of music like magazines. I have also created a leaflet which provides more detailed, further information and be placed in student unions to directly target students. I have used a hashtag across the campaign which allows people to take instant action to show their support and help spread the word. My campaign is aimed at music fans who are young adults and in particular, students. This group of people are very active online and typically aim to save money on everyday items and cannot afford luxuries, resulting in a high music piracy rate within this age range, which I found from my research.
The main message of my campaign is to raise awareness about the impact music piracy has on artists and the music industry, resulting in people considering and hopefully changing their actions regarding how they obtain music. I have communicated my message primarily through the use of typography as this allows me to present shocking facts which many people may not have considered or be aware of and ask rhetorical questions, resulting in the audience querying their actions and whether they are really doing the right thing. This text, along with some use of vector imagery I created, will hopefully lead to a reduced amount of illegal music downloads.
UI PROGRESS
On my final page I provide the steps that can be taken to stop music piracy. I give the user two options that allows them to pay for music at a cheap price and therefore limiting music piracy so bands can survive. Both icons animate when they are hovered over and when clicked they take the user to the respective website. BandCamp‘s payout model one of its most applauded features. Known for paying artists a hefty profit and cutting out the middleman, Bandcamp collects 15% of digital sales and only 10% on other merchandise. Bandcamp is a much more profitable option for artists who want to sell directly to fans.
One benefit of Spotify is the exposure to a large audience. With over 24 million active users in 32 countries, Spotify is an easy way for artists to cast a wide net and make their music available, especially to listeners who may not otherwise actively seek out their music. If a band gets popular their stream count will rise resulting in more money for the artist.
BandCamp is the preferred solution as the artist makes more money per track but can still sell their music at a reasonable price.
UI EXPERIMENTATION/PROGRESS
I added some animation to the vectors on this page to add to the interactivity of my UI. Each vector has it’s own animation that is activated when the user hovers over the image. At first the vector was constantly animated but I decided that it would just distract the user so the hover function was added.
I used https://coveloping.com/tools/css-animation-generator for help with the coding of the CSS3 animations.
UI PROGRESS
Beginning work on the parallax scrolling record cover. At the moment the record just slides out - I would like to to have it roll out though. I might need to consider other CSS3 animations that activate with scrollr.
I decided on this design to give the user the excitement and feeling of taking a vinyl out of it’s sleeve - pushing the idea of buying music and in this case tangible music such as LPs.
