Do you feel like it’s ever too late to start riding? I took lessons for a while as a teenager and I’ve done a LOT of reading of horse and riding encyclopedias over my lifetime because I’ve always loved horses/riding so much but not owning/living near horses has prevented me from really delving into the hobby. I’m 24 now and I’m wanting to start taking lessons again. What do you think? Any advice?
It is NEVER too late! The biggest advice I can give to someone starting to ride late is... get in touch with your inner child and remember to have trust, let go, and have FUN! The biggest difference I found when teaching very young beginners vs teenage or adult beginners is that kids are fearless and willing to try anything. And fair enough, kids have rubber bones right? But they are there for the love the horse and everything is exciting to them! The biggest barriers for my adult students were established habits and excuses. “My leg doesn’t move that way because....” “I am nervous and that’s how its going to be because....” Just make sure you don’t fall into a trap of expecting less of your own ability. Be open! Give it a shot! Let yourself feel a little silly, or a little stiff, or a little off balance, and run with it! A good instructor will never push you to do more than you are capable of, and will keep things fresh. So trust them, trust yourself, and trust the horse they match you with and GO FOR IT! =D I hope that helps, and good luck with your riding! Reach out any time, I’m happy to chat!
