Gallentine Off to Solid Start

It didn’t take Muskingum freshman Taylor Gallentine long to work her way into the starting lineup. By the third game, the St. Clairsville all-Ohioan was inserted at right field and has stayed there the last six games. In 19 at-bats, Gallentine has collected seven hits, including one double, while driving in five runs. Her .368 batting average is third best on the team. Thursday, she drove in three runs on four hits as the Muskies split a pair of games, falling 4-3 to Aurora and defeating Saint Mary’s (Minnesota). Muskingum has six games left before Ohio Athletic Conference play begins on March 18 against Wittenberg. The Muskies were tabbed as the preseason favorites to win the conference and it appears Gallentine will play a major role in that push. Fellow OVAC Product Hannah Smith is 2-2 in the circle for the Muskies, striking out 16 and holding a 3.79 ERA in four appearances.

Cardinals Fall in Quarterfinals

Notre Dame College beat Wheeling University for the third time this season, this time ending the Cardinals’ season in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain East Conference Tournament. Wheeling hung close throughout, but the Falcons pulled away with an 18-11 fourth-quarter run to secure the victory. The Cardinals finished 11-19 and 9-13 in the MEC, a far cry better than the last-place spot they were picked to finish during the preseason. Khira Burton led Wheeling with 20 points and six assists while Taliah Cashwell had another solid game with 16 points. Sophomore Lily Ritz was held to 11 points, but her 24 rebounds broke the conference tournament’s single-game mark, as well as the total rebounds in the tournament mark, which now stands at 44. Wheeling shot 40 percent from the field but was only 50 percent at the line (8 of 16) and Notre Dame’s press forced 24 turnovers that directly to 25 points.

Hilltoppers Earn All-Region Honors

West Liberty’s outdoor track season begins today, but Coach Justin Simpson’s charges are still earning honors for their efforts during the indoor season. One relay team and four individuals were honored with all-Atlantic region recognition. Tavian Robinson and Michael Harriman had a top-five regional mark in the 800 and Isaiah Robinson did so in the triple jump. Philip White was recognized for his work in the 5,000 meters while Adam ‘Donnell’s record-breaking performance at the MEC Indoor Championship’s in the heptathlon earned him a spot. The distance relay team of Harriman, Richardson, Robinson and Danah Phillips also earned a spot. The Hilltoppers are back in action today at the Charleston Early Bird meet at UC Stadium in Charleston.

Enochs Earns First Team All-OEC Honors

Marietta senior and Fort Frye product Alexis Enochs was named to the all-Ohio Athletic Conference’s first team after turning in an impressive final campaign. The Pioneers post scored 13.4 points per game, good for sixth in the conference and tied for the team lead in rebounds with 5.1 per game. Enochs also eclipsed the 1,000-point mark this season, the 13th women’s player to do so. Her 1,081 career points is 11th all-time on the women’s list. She was honorable mention in 2018-19. Other OVAC products honored were Parkersburg South’s Devin Hefner and Cambridge’s Marlo Taylor, both from Marietta, who were named honorable mention.

ESPN2 is showing Georgia Tech at Clemson at 7 p.m., followed by VCU at Davidson at 9 p.m. On the women’s side, Georgia Tech faces No. 10 North Carolina State in the ACC Tournament at 6 p.m. on ATTSN. Later, Boston College takes on Duke at 8 p.m., also on ATTSN. NBA action gets underway at 8 p.m. n ESPN as the Miami Heat travel down the bayou to face the New Orleans Pelicans and Zion Williamson. The latter half of the Friday doubleheader features the Milwaukee Bucks at Los Angeles Lakers at 10:30 p.m. The NHL Network is airing the Chicago Blackhawks at Detroit Red Wings at 7 p.m. Fox Sports Ohio affiliates will have the college hockey matchup for St. Cloud State at Minnesota-Duluth at 8 p.m. Also, at 8 p.m., Notre Dame takes on Minnesota in B1G Ten Tournament action. The first round of the PGA Champions Tour tees off at 6 p.m. on the GOLF Channel is will be followed by a replay of second-round action of the Arnold Palmer Invitational at 8:30 p.m. Motorsports fans can watch final practice runs for this weekend’s LS Tractor 200 and FanShield 500 at 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively, on FS1.
