The Scientist
2012 Mutant Apocalypse! Donnie x Reader
[ Hello everyone! So -- this is the first x reader I've ever written, so go easy on me! I notice that poor DonBot doesn't get any love, so I thought I'd fix that! I'm also open to requests for future x readers, so don't be afraid to ask! I'm pretty flexible on who/what I can write, so perhaps you'll see your request get published! Anywho, enough babbling! I hope you all enjoy the story, I'll see you in the next one! ♡
PS. I didn't write the full song of 'The Scientist' by Coldplay. I selected lyrics from the song most relevant to the story.
~ Dr Arrow ]
Your breath caught in your throat at the sight before you; Donnie. Who you thought was dead -- was now a robot. You remembered the bot having been built as Metalhead 2.0 -- but you thought it was just another Don due to it looking /exactly/ like him.
It has been years since you’d seen him -- or any of the turtles for that matter. Not since the mutagen explosion that turned everyone into mutants. Well, except for you. You happened to be in the lair when it happened, the boys having told you to stay behind for safety when they found out the Kraang were planning to detonate the bomb. Turns out...they couldn’t stop it. And when you returned to the surface, everything was gone.
You made it alright on your own, though your heart ached at the thought of your best friends possibly being dead -- especially Donnie. Over the years you had grown to accept that maybe...it was true. That they were gone. But now? Tears began to form in the corners of your eyes as you stared ahead from beyond some rocks you hid behind. At first, you thought it was bandits. Several times you barely escaped the grasps of some gangs because a human hadn’t been seen since the explosion.
[ Cue music <3 ]
Come up to meet you, tell you I’m sorry . . .
Slowly, you climbed your way down from the rocks and towards the Shellraiser Don appeared to be repairing. A few pebbles thunked their way down -- rather loudly - and it no doubt caught the attention of the former mutant. He was quick to pull out his staff, ready to fight.
“ Who’s there?! Show yourself! “ he warned. And as you made your way closer, arms up in surrender. It was mere seconds that the metal turtle dropped his weapon. Antennae raising in shock, then lowering. “ Y/N. . .? “
It's been years -- and you were all grown up. Looked different, and yet he recognized you. Tears spilled down your cheeks in that instant as you nodded, unable to form words due to the overwhelming surge of emotions you felt.
“ Y/N ! ! ! “ Donnie screamed. Running towards you and wrapping his arms around you in a tight hug, picking you up and twirling you both in the process.
“ I can’t believe it's really you! RAPH! Come out here!! “
You don’t know how lovely, you are.
Joyous laughs escaped you amidst your tearful happiness. Wrapping your arms around Don’s neck, despite the small amount of discomfort due to his new metal body, you hugged him back just as tight. “ I - O-Oh my god I thought you guys w-were dead! “ You cried.
It wasn’t long before Raph came stumbling out, and upon seeing you being embraced by his brother, he stood dumbfounded, then he too quickly made his way over. Don let you go so that his older brother could take a turn to crush you in a hug. “ I can’t believe its really you tiger! I thought we lost ya! “ he says, nuzzling his face into your shoulder whilst you nuzzled yours into his neck. “ Its me -- I never left. . . “ you whisper.
[ Very small timeskip brought to you by your local clown! ]
After your emotional reunion, you now currently sat with the brothers in front of a small fire. The flames flickering here and there to the gentle breeze that swept through the endless desert.
“ Y/N, we -- I …..we’re so sorry we couldn’t come back to find you after...My body, it got destroyed. Raph and I separated from the others...we don’t even know if they’re alive. “
Donnie spoke up, breaking the comfortable silence. Raph nodded, but he didn’t have much to say. What could he say? Things hadn’t been the same and he was sure you knew that by now.
Looking up at the purple-clad turtle, you gave a weak smile. “ You don’t have to apologize. What happened then was something none of us could have known -- or stopped. But...we’re here now, let's take comfort in the fact we’re together again. Alright? “ Though it was sad news to know Leo and Mikey were still out there or...gone, you were happy to know these two were at least still here.
“ Yeah. “ Raph mutters, clearly frustrated. Sure, he was ecstatic you were here, but it bothered him knowing his brothers weren’t. That you all weren’t together...as a family. Two were still missing. Standing, he nods his head towards the Shellraiser and fakes a yawn. “ Well,I’m gonna hit the hay. You should too, Y/N. “ Nodding, you smile. “ I’ll head in soon. I wanna stay out here a bit longer. “ Grunting with a curt nod, he bids a goodnight, as do you, and disappears.
That left just you and Donnie. While you continued to stare into the hypnotic dances of orange, he stared at you. Despite your rugged and dirty appearance, you still looked as stunning as the day he left for the bomb.
“ Y-You know...you look lovely, Y/N. “ He stammers out shyly. Where the hell did that come from?! That -- it was so random! He mentally beat himself for that.
Running in circles, coming in tales, heads are a science apart.
Looking up at him, you had a bewildered expression. Lovely? You wished. In this new world, one didn’t have the luxuries they once had. Inevitably, it left you a complete mess. Regardless, the comment didn’t fail to bring a small blush dusting your cheeks. “ Thank you. . . ? “
Nobody said it was easy, nobody said it would be this hard . . . Questions of science, science and progress, do not speak as loud as my heart.
“ I-I’m sorry! It's just...I missed you. “ he mumbles. Rubbing the back of his head awkwardly. Giggling, your hand comes to rest on his upper-arm. “ I missed you too, dork. You and Raph. “ You say with a smile. But -- that isn’t what Donnie had meant. For a while, a LONG while, he liked you. And ever since you all were separated, he spent countless nights thinking about you. About the future -- a future of you and him and no apocalypse.
Having a relationship out here was a dangerous risk considering for either or partner, feelings would cloud judgement in situations. Judgement that could very well end up in tragedy. However, despite knowing this, he wanted to pursue one with you. Problem was -- how did he tell you? How would you react? He didn’t know how you’d feel about it, about him. Especially now that he was a robot.
“ Yeah . . . “ he eventually says. Head dipping. You noticed, and your expression became one of concern. “ Is everything alright, Donnie? “ you asked. Turning his head to you, he nods and lets out -- or tries to -- a reassuring chuckle. “ Of course! My battery is probably low. “ he lies. Unfortunately for him, being a robot didn’t deter you from being able to read him like an open book. Giving him a stubborn glare, you crossed your arms. “ Liar. Something’s bothering you -- please, talk to me Don. I’m still the same friend you can confide in. “
And tell me you love me, come back and haunt me, oh and I rush to the start . . .
Antennae flickering nervously, he fiddles about with his fingers before sighing deeply and hanging his head in defeat. “ Okay -- alright. But promise this won’t affect our relationship in any way, if you don’t agree with what I’m about to say? “
Raising a curious brow, you nod and smile a bit. “ I promise. I couldn’t live without what we have now, Nerdle. “ You both chuckle at the nickname, you loved calling him that due to his science-y nature. When you calmed, it was silent for a good few moments, before the metal turtle had the courage to speak.
Taking your hands in his, he looked directly at you and with the most serious aura he could muster -- considering he couldn’t express facial emotions. You furrowed your brows, but were more than ready to listen. Giving his hands a small, encouraging squeeze.
“ Y-Y/N, for a long time I’ve felt this way and -- and...even now I still do despite all our time apart. I li--no. I LOVE you. I love you, and I promise regardless of where we end up after this, I’ll always be here. I’ll be here to protect you, and I’ll make sure you NEVER leave my side again. Life without you just isn’t a life worth living, I need you in it. Friends or lovers. It’s…. “ He pauses for a moment, looking for the right words. “ It's okay if you don’t feel the same way. I just thought you should know how I feel. “
Nobody said it was easy….nobody said it would be this hard.
If Donnie still had his old body, he was sure he’d be red-faced and shaking. Both excited and scared of how you might reply. You, however, were frozen. Eyes wide, mouth agape, cheeks red, you were shocked. He….loved you? And after all this time you thought your affections would go unnoticed. It wasn’t new to anyone the huge crush he’d had on April O’ Niel, but you had no idea that somewhere down the road those affections turned to you.
And….you were happy. Happy? You were soaring! Never did you think this day would come -- and as a smile formed on your face, Donnie knew you felt the same way. Lunging, you tackle him to the ground in a hug, in which he returns, and yell happily for the whole world to hear. “ I love you too Donnie! “
Raph poked his head from a window moments later and yelled back; “ Keep it down lovebirds! Some of us are tryna get our beauty sleep! “
Slapping a hand over your mouth, you and Donnie sat silent for a moment, before the two of you burst into laughter.
I’m going back to the start.
