It's very strange to think it's already been a year since Nick Talbot of Gravenhurst died. About a week ago I had meant to write something in remembrance, but then I felt my heart grow heavy with the thought of it and also I'm not sure if I have anything meaningful to add to what I wrote at the end of last year. To be honest, this entry had left me with very mixed emotions as it's probably the most personal thing I've shared in some public form. Then again, a number of people let me know afterwards about how helpful they found it, which in this case really meant a lot to me. Just when I had given up the idea of a post, I came across this cover of a Gravenhurst song in my Bandcamp feed. Like Knut of Eardrums Music who has written about it here, I have to admit listening to Gravenhurst can be tricky, because it makes me sad. I guess it was always that way for me though, just now it's at least twice as difficult. So in a curious mix of reluctance and hopeful anticipation I started playing the song and felt instantly rewarded by Mute Forest's version of "The Diver". Kael Smith explains it was his attempt of coping with the tragic news, the impact of which can be felt in this intimate, beautiful recording.
