Day 1 – Magical day
First and foremost, my goal for this week is to be more creative. The podcast for Day 1 of the info magical challenge proclaimed that multi-tasking does not exist, and that we are in fact rapidly shifting from one thing to the next. This is depleting our brains of neurological resources (mostly glucose). My task for the day was to focus on a single task, and that I should take in information with my goal (to be more creative) in mind. Today, I tried to do exactly that; focus on a single task at a time, and believe me when I say it was very difficult for me. I spent half of my day at work where unfortunately I was not able to fulfill the day’s challenge properly. Although, I had an essay to write, and so I allotted some time during the day to start my draft. My task, was to write my draft, and to stay focused on that single task. As discussed in the podcast, I was subjected to external-interruptions however, the worst of them all were the self-interruptions. On one hand, the bright LED notifications constantly popping up while I was writing my draft were very hard to ignore. Not to mention, the sounds of the notifications as well. On the other hand, thinking of ideas to contribute to each paragraph, would lead me to daydream about random things entirely irrelevant to the task at hand. As a matter of fact, a little gust of wind coming from the window was enough to distract me and keep me distracted. All things considered, not only did completing this challenge helped me analyze the types of habits I exhibit while trying to focus on a single task, it helped me recognize them as self-interrupting. Moving forward, i’m going to try my best to focus on one thing at a time, and ensure that the single task is completed before moving on to the next.
