But yeah!! hope everyone’s having a good day 🤩❤️
I drew my axolotl dude dressed up as my Finals contestant.
I'm actually on an AI hate train of thought right now and I need to get this hot take out.
How The Finals and Arc Raiders did AI voices is not some magically "ethical" exception.
For those unaware (and little bits of these details may be off this is just my understanding), the game company behind these games paid voice actors to do voice work AND train a model for them to be able to generate more voice lines with their voice. This was apparently clear in their contract and they agreed to paying the VAs royalties based on the fact that they would keep using their voice.
Now, is this TECHNICALLY better than companies just wanting to scrape everything for free and just generate voices and pay no one? Yes. Is this GOOD? Absolutely not. These voice actors have, essentially, commodified their talent and performance art for a buck. I'm not going to judge their character here, maybe they really need the money and we all live under capitalism. However, as a practice this still sucks, it devalues the art and performance of VO work and we should NOT be normalizing this as some exception just because a little of the money goes in the right direction.
Essentially, if we let this slide then what happens if it becomes the norm? No more voice acting as a diverse field with countless up and comers practicing a performance art. We'd just have a few trained models for "gruff male sounding protag A, B, and C" and "seductive fem sounding protag A, B, and C" ect. with a few individuals who just got on that wagon first receiving royalties and zero hope of this art form expanding or evolving with new, diverse talent.
Bottom line, no, it's not "one of the few ok uses of gen AI." Generative AI in the arts adds nothing, it only takes from the people that actually worked to make art to promise to the C-suite fat cats a cheap and quick turnaround of a product subpar but just good enough for the cost to turn a profit because the cost was already paid by the real work of artists and the fat cats just hit a magic algorithm button.
GET BASIL OUT OF THE FINALS HE DOESN'T WANT TO BE THERE!!!!
