Use of sound in Hannibal: Mizumono
I just re-watched the Hannibal season 2 finale, Mizumono, and have seen how this episode is orchestrated with metaphors through sound. As the events of this finale have been set up and anticipated over a long time; throughout the first three quarters of the episode, there is a constant ticking sound, as we the viewers know what is to happen (or at least we think we do) and so until the end is reached the rest of the episode is a countdown. The ticking is in different volumes and variations for different characters, Jack Crawford has the most prominent of these as to represent the 'counting down' until what he sees as the end of Hannibal and his is the most intense of all the ticking as he is utterly focused on the end and is the most recent of the characters to realise what Hannibal really is. Alana Bloom's ticking is more dull and faded, as she has had suspicions of Hannibal for a longer time, hence the quieter ticking, but it is a duller sound as she is not as sure as Jack is about whether Hannibal truly is a monster as she believes she know's him well, which is reflected in the sound. The only moment in which there is no ticking prior to the final quarter of the episode, is when Will and Hannibal are having their 'last supper', this is because both Will and Hannibal know who Hannibal is and both know what is (intended) to happen next, they both have clarity which is reflected in the sound around them. When Jack finally meets Hannibal and begins to draw his weapon, the ticking transforms into a irratic sound mimicking alarms as if to represent the ending of a countdown, the moment both characters are clear of each others intentions, this then flows into the more familiar fighting music, a deep drum sound mixed with fluttering lighter sounds from flutes and such, which i think is representation of the more ominous darker presence (Hannibal, the deeper sound) and the far simpler and less significant Jack (lighter flurry), this is clear when Hannibal stabs jack in the neck as the deeper sounds become more prominent showing how Hannibal has dominated over Jack, and the lighter sounds become disjointed, showing how Jack is now inferior and panicking as he is now soon to die. Alana's dull ticking resumes as she arrives and enters the house, as she is yet to confirm her fears, but when she fails at shooting Hannibal and finally realises who Hannibal is there is now alarm in the sound, it in fact quietens, as she has had her suspicions long enough to not be as surprised as Jack. Will arrives and a version of Brian Reitzell - Bach's Aria of the Goldberg begins to play and all ticking has stopped, as the only active characters now are Will and Hannibal who are fully aware of the situation. The use of such professional music represents how orchestrated Hannibal was to plan out and manipulate all the events leading up to this, and how he truly was in control the whole time, giving a clarity to the viewer as we now have closure on everything leading up to this end.
Sorry i'm still not over that finale and had to geek out a bit-- rakesh-in-the-flesh

WAIT REMEMBER HOW JACK CRAWFORD WAS LIKE
"We'll have three witnesses blah blah blah"
AND IT FELL TO SHIT CUZ BEDELIA SAID ZIP, VERGER WAS TOO HIGH, AND WILL COULDNT SAY MUCH CUZ VERGER DENIED IT???
WELL, NOW WE HAVE 4 PEOPLE DYING, AND WE KNOW THEY CAN'T ALL DIE OR ELSE THE SHOW WOULD BE SHIT.
BUT IF WE SAY THAT THE STATEMENT ABOVE IS FORESHADOWING, THEN WE KNOW THAT 3 PEOPLE WILL SURVIVE.
NOW MY BET IS ON ALANA, WILL, AND CRAWFORD SO THAT IT FITS THE 2 MALES AND ONE FEMALE PATTERN AND WE ALREADY THOUGHT ABIGAIL WAS DEAD.
BUT WHO KNOWS.
MAYBE HANNIBAL REALLY DID FEEL SORRY FOR TAKING ABIGAIL AWAY, AND THIS IS HIS WAY OF RETURNING HER?
OH GOD, I CANT TAKE THE SUSPENSE.
Abigail survived her father. She survived Nick Boyle. She survived Savoreux.
If Alana, Jack and Will can be Schrödinger's dead/alive after this finale then so can Abigail
Hannibal will die before she does o fucking k
