Off the Leash Again

People are just really determined to let their dogs throw themselves into Ivan’s mouth.

We’re still getting acquainted with our new neighborhood, and I have decided that Ivan will be walked unmuzzled due to variety of scary human characters lurking around our new neighborhood. He is either walked on a Halti or a prong and in either case he is literally no danger unless a dog basically throws itself into his mouth.

So yesterday a little Cairn Terrier came bounding down its driveway, barking, right at us. Owner behind yelling at the dog, dog ignoring completely. Ivan’s head and tail come up– no growling no hackles. Exact replay of what happened last time. I say, “Let’s go!”, shorten my leash, put my left hand under his chin and hold his face gently but firmly at my side as we quicken our pace to get the Hell out of there.

Owner yells at us to stop, his dog will follow us if we don’t. I tell him, “This dog will totally bite your dog if he has the chance.” He says, “I know but– I have a bad back”.

I just? Of all the excuses, really? Really? BTW, I had to take 2 days off work earlier this week because of my back, but I still leash my dog. And I would never in a million years allow my dog to charge down our driveway off-leash and threaten people walking by.
