Location: The William Morris Society
Encounter: The Kelmscott Chaucer
Prompt: The physicality of a text / The power of a place where a text was inspired, written, or produced
Previously not knowing who William Morris was or what his life and works consisted of, the William Morris society provided an abundance of pleasant surprises. The house itself was quaint and welcoming, with a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Not only was that enjoyable in itself, but also to be in a place of such history felt extremely powerful. When my group got to the printing press room, history came alive. To stand in front of an actual printing press and see all the little bits of texts and multiple pieces of technology that go into the production of these works allowed a firmer grasp on all that we had learned in class about printing. Being able to learn about how these texts were produced through visual representation furthered this understanding as well. Plus, having the opportunity to simply stand in the room/house where this production took place was incredible in itself and brought to the text a whole new meaning. While it was just a facsimile of the original, being able to physically see and flip through the pages of the Kelmscott Chaucer was surreal. Although I had learned about Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales in the British Literature course, I do not think I gained a full appreciation for it until this trip, particularly during this excursion and the one to Canterbury itself. The Kelmscott Chaucer, originally published in 1896, contains beautiful wood-cut illustrations engraved and printed in black alongside the text lines, some of these printed in red in Chaucer or Troy type. What really struck me were the illustrations. These were exceptional and abundant with rich and decorative borders, almost feeling like an intricate ornament or stained glass window in a cathedral. The fact that this was also the last great project of Morris’s life made that the meaning of it all even more special. The labor and love that went into it are noticeable and notable and one can feel the fulfillment that Morris must have felt while producing such a text.
