a tail of two souls.
The sun dipped beneath the horizon, its orange glow lighting the underwater kingdom Woohyun was slowly swimming away from, leaving it behind him with the prospect of the world above tempting him closer. It had been a few days since he’d last ventured onto land, and he missed the feeling of wriggling his toes in the sand and walking like humans do. By the time he broke the surface of the water the sun had left them for the night and the moonlight shimmered on the surface of the water, reflecting on each tiny wave, the sea calm that evening.
He took a moment to enjoy it - the view of the little houses set back from the beach, their lights still on. He yearned to submerge himself in that life, even if he didn’t know many people and didn’t have any money, he’d found many humans were kind enough to clothe him or feed him. It was rare, but he’d acquired one outfit since his first visit, a little old lady in a pastry shop helping him out and feeding him. She knew about mermaids and said she would keep his secret.
If only all humans were like that, Woohyun often thought to himself. Hunters still lurked in the shadows, and it chilled him to the bone.
Swimming to the shore he pulled himself from the water carefully, eyes darting around to check there was no one close by who might see him - no a soul was in sight, so with a sigh of relief he hurriedly moved, wriggling himself further up the beach.
Until a sound caught his attention and his eyes shifted over to his left where a figure stood half lit up by the moon - Woohyun’s heart stopped, eyes falling to where his tail was still half submerged in water.
