So it's rare that I buy new gaming hardware and rarer still for me to review it, but I had the Atari GameStation Go on preorder ($179) for a while and it just showed up. Lots of more detailed reviews on it out already but my thoughts:
Likes:
- big screen, although plastic construction and reflective as people have pointed out
- has your favorite arcade and home console Atari classics, along with some Midway, Namco, Stern etc classics
-HDMI out and headphone jack, SD expansion slot
- paddle and track ball really improve play on analog control games like centipede, missile command and breakout
-Atari Recharged titles are a nice addition (would love to see more games from the anniversary edition)
Less thrilled:
- lag on some games, imprecise analog control sometimes
- sound system is pretty weak, lacks any bass. I mean yeah it's a small device with tiny speakers but my phone sounds a lot better even tho smaller
- no Bluetooth support at all for controllers or sound
-minimal configurability via settings
- multi player support largely an afterthought
- mini trackball performs better on some games than others. It's small so not too accurate, had issues with missile command but works nicely for say Major Havoc
Overall an ok machine but for the price I kinda would expect a bit more quality touches and features. I would give it like a B- or so, but possibly some upside to a higher grade if My Arcade releases some timely updates for firmware and content.
