Stares at him for a long while with hardset eyes that rarely seemed to blink. Gradually lifts one of her stiff hands and reaches out towards him, with equally stiffed movements, as if it took much effort to will herself to do such. Allowing him time to see each thing she did, finally landing her hand heavily on his shoulder. A sort of affirming pat.

Anticipation. There’s a quiet atmosphere of anticipation- that staring is always so  intense. He can’t read her.

He still can’t read her, she’s hardly expressive at all.

So despite fully anticipating the pat, he still cringes a bit when it does happen, accompanied by an embarrassing, muffled vocalization of “mmph”
