I have a lot of feelings right now about Matthew Morgan.
Upon reading several fan fictions and blurbs and text posts and looking at fan art... I have a lot of feelings. So I’m going to do what I do best. I am going to write them out in three basic points...
•Matthew Morgan was basically the world’s greatest dad and husband.
He cared for Cammie and loved her so much. She was his entire world. As Joe stated, “there’s nothing in this world that would have kept him from you.” All of Cammie’s training. Her code name became “the chameleon” for a reason. She was so good at what she did and she started at such a young age. Where did she learn all about being a pavement artist? Matt. Where did she learn about hiding in plain sight? Matthew. And about counter surveillance? About tailing a subject? Her father. Matthew freakin Morgan. Who was so good at what he did, that he disappeared to get chocolate in the middle of a mission and was not even gone for five minuets. Who was such an amazing spy, that he was on track to bringing down a huge terrorist organization with his best friend when he was barely becoming an adult. And he came close to succeeding. He taught her everything he knew. He wanted her to be safe. But, I can bet you a good amount of money, that he gave her the option. He gave her a choice. She could follow in his footsteps or she could be a regular teenager and be a regular girl. (Or as regular as possible considering her legacy). He let her choose whether or not she wanted to be apart of this life. And while he was worried (and he would always worry, part of being a father) that she was not cut out for this life. He didn’t want her to be. He wanted her as safe as possible. But, you can’t just walk away. You can’t just drop everything and walk away from being an operative. Especially one as good as Matthew Morgan. He knew that better than anyone. Oh, but he would have in a heartbeat. He would have given up everything for his daughter.
• Matthew Morgan was good at what he did.
He was an amazing operative and an even better best friend. There was nothing (short of Cammie) that he would not do for Joe Solomon. Nothing. He had his back no matter what. He was his partner. He trusted Joe with his entire being. He trusted Joe with his life. And in this business, that was the difference between life and death. Who helped Joe with his nightmares? Who was there when Joe got back from his missions? Who was there when Matt fell in love and he needed someone to talk to? Who was there when Matt found out he was going to be a father? Joe. There was absolutely nothing they would not do for each other. So when this op came up and Matt had to go, he didn’t have a choice. He was so close. And he would be damned if he got Joe Solomon hurt or worse... killed. So he was taking risks. He was doing what he was trained to do. Going radio silent was supposed to be part of the plan. He was going to come back home. He promised Rachel. He promised Cammie. He promised Joe. And Matthew Morgan does not break his promises.
•Matthew Morgan was so much more...
Matthew Morgan was supposed to live. He just was. He was supposed to grow up into an old man with Joe right beside him. He was supposed to grow old with Rachel. He was supposed to watch Cammie fall in love. He was supposed to threaten the guy who stole her heart because god help anyone who hurt his daughter. He was supposed to walk her down the aisle. He was supposed to hold her kids and teach them tiny spy hacks. He was suppsed to go on road trips with Cammie and Rachel. He was supposed to be around for a very long time.
But things happen in this life. Especially as a trained operative. You don’t always get a guaranteed trip back home. You either do or you end up in a box. And there was nothing that Matthew Morgan would not do for his family.
He knew what he was doing. Spies can not afford to make mistakes. But they do. They make mistakes. Not because they aren’t good at what they do. Not because they are afraid. Because they are human.
Matt’s death was tragic. It was the worst thing to happen to the Morgan family. Not even having a body to bury. But, without his disappearance, Cammie and Rachel would never have gotten where they did.
Cammie probably wouldn’t have met Josh. Or Zach. She wouldn’t have been as close to Bex or Liz because they were were there when Matt went missing. They were also there (along with Zach and Macey) when they found out the truth. Cammie would never have become half the spy or girl she is today, if it weren’t for them. If it weren’t for how her parents raised her. Joe probably never would have taught at the Gallagher Academy. Sure, he still would have been right there with Cammie as she grew up but, not the way that she needed. Because he wanted—-no, needed—- to keep her safe. Because he did not want her to make the same mistakes that he did. Matt’s disappearance never would have been that driving force for Cammie. Or even Joe and Rachel.
As much as it would have been amazing for him to watch Cammie grow and grow old with Rachel and maybe even watch Joe get a girl of his own...
The death of Matthew Morgan (CIA legacy, best friend, and father) was important.
And as much as we miss him, things would not have been the same if he were still here.
