The Nauglafring
Ailios starts his tale:
„Remember ye all how Urin the Steadfast cast the gold of Glorund before the feet of Tinwelint, and after would not touch it again, but went in sorrow back to Hisilome, and there died?(…) Behold then, (…), in great grief gazed the king upon Urin as he left the hall, and he was weary for the evil of Melko that thus deceived all hearts; yet tells the tale that so potent were the spells that Mim the fatherless had woven about the hoard that, even as it lay upon the floor of the king’s halls shining strangely in the light of the torches that burnt there, already were all who looked upon it touched by its subtle evil.”
#FirstCaseOfTheDragonSickness
And then follows the sad story of greed, betrayals and slaughter, and the end of Artanor... But I'm sorry, Tinwelint, you brought it upon yourself:
The necklace Nauglafring was made from the gold hoarded by the dragon Glorund.
1) It was said that the evil of the dragon somehow had gotten transferred to the gold and it was better not to touch it AT ALL, never mind making new jewellery items out of it...
2) this gold was also cursed by its designated guardian - Mim the dwarf!
3) the dwarves who made the necklace, made it with bitterness in their hearts as they were earlier tricked by Tinwelint... yeah... #ItAllAddsUp
4) it had a Silmarill inserted. You know, the one that spent some time in Melko’s crown. Also the one that the Sons of Feanor would kill for.
This necklace was cursed AF!!!
And the sons of Feanor actually did make an appearance! Obviously they wanted "their" Silmaril back, with or without the Nauglafring, depending on how Dior wanted to handle things.
Dior didn’t want to handle things at all.
Which led to yet another kinslaying, but in this version Maglor, Celegorm and Caranthir die in the process.
Also, apparently the battle for the Silmaril happened on the same day when Melko attacked Gondolin.
