Homestuck Movement

A young man stands in his bedroom. It just so happens that today, the 13th of April, is this young man's birthday. Though it was thirteen years ago he was given life, it is only today he will be given a name! What will the name of this young man be? (Hussie 1)

This is the writing from the inscription of the web comic Homestuck, a web comic that is taking the internet by storm. Unlike other comics, which are limited to the artistic visual aids and bubble style speech, Homestuck is a portrayal of every kind of art form. Within the seven thousand plus pages of this monster of a novel lies art in the shape of images, landscapes, song, video game, interactive media, sign language, braille and many other forms of expressive styles( Rosetti). Containing somewhere around one hundred characters the story follows eight separate universes, six separate species’, as well as infinite alternate timelines and dimensions’. Yet even with the plethora of artistic outlets used in Homestuck. The most enticing and imaginative is the musical composition of the series created by devoted fans. It is created using a diverse arrangement of instruments with deep connection and meaning to the characters and the events they partake in.

One of the aspects of the music came from the characters themselves. Each human originally played an Instrument: The base, piano, violin and turn tables. Thus the song “Showtime” came into being. It was created as a variation for each of the four children to play on each of their instruments. The almost melancholy tune is played in a way that expresses the title of the song. The song in this way foreshadows that the children will soon come to realize that this game is far bigger than anything they could have anticipate, along with repercussions they were never prepared to face.

Many of the characters in Homestuck have a theme running with the musical compositions linked to their persona. Each song is moving, intense while drawing the perfect mental images to the scenes expressed, snapping it all into vivid clarity. Dave Strider is one of the four human children playing the game. He is known for being able to control and manipulate time and multiple alternate timelines of himself. Because of this many of the songs dedicated to the character have the sounds of clocks in the background as well as a repetitive sound like the passing of time. But their existing traits are not the only things resonating in the songs dedicated to the characters. Many songs portray incidents and dramatic events that have affected them in some way. The song “CAR♑IVAL” brings together the vivid imagery of a once passive character who then goes insane and begins killing off his companions, preaching his dark religion to his best friend over a computer chat. His friend is trying to run away, hide from him knowing that if he is found he will be killed (Hussie 1).While another tune “Requited”was one of lovers separation. Two lovers fighting for change in their world, and are convicted because of it. One was sentenced to death, the other to exile. The song follows the character The Disciple, who draws images of their love on the walls of her cave in her olive colored blood until her untimely death, locked away in isolation(Hussie 1).

The newest Homestuck Album Genesis Frog was released to the internet viewer on October 23 2012 (Hussie 1). Each song derived itself from the Universe that Earth presents itself within. According to Homestuck our Universe is actually an omnipotent frog which was selectively bred by an alien race (Hussie 1).This nineteen track album is created with imaginative and complex compositions using every instrument in a full symphony. From brass to strings to wind instruments (Rosetti). It blends these sounds into truly the most expansive and Album Homestuck has seen yet.

Over the course of its five year run, Homestuck has become a rapidly growing phenomenon. The fans are so devoted with a fortitude and conviction that leads them to simply hand Andrew Hussie money in the street.”$150 dollars American, a gift which came with a pretty firm stipulation. I was to use this money to hire a man to create my celestial soul portrait. In this way, I could have my soul properly beautified as well as immortalized” (Hussie 2). While most of the characters, art, and story is created by Hussie himself, the music is all fan composed and fan preformed. The expansive fandom of Homestuck shows incredible determination and loyalty to the series and its creator. “When Hussie told fans he aspired to create a video game based on the comic and asked them to fund it, they eagerly complied, raising $1.9 million dollars in less than a month"(Orsini). By the time they shut off the ability to pledge money Hussie and MSPaintAdventures had been given over 2.5 million dollars. Homestuck is less a comic to read and more an experience that wraps a person up and intoxicates them with intense and imaginative roller coaster of a tale with characters that you feel attached to on a personal level and musical compositions that bring the vibrant world of Homestuck to life.
