Okay so what needs to be said right off the bat is that basically all the first prog musicians came up at the same time and place, and they all Knew Each Other. It’s why Asia happened, folks.

My favorite thing to joke about, though, is that Yes and ELP were basically One Band. Whatever “rivalry” existed was basically entirely fabricated by the media, because these guys:

• Recorded at Advision together

• Shared an audio engineer

• Shared EQUIPMENT (famously, Yes borrowed Keith Emerson’s Hammond Organ L100 to record The Yes Album)

• Recorded Works Vol 2/GFTO at the same time, in the same studio in Switzerland

• Also pre-ELP, The Nice toured with Yes in Ireland. Also Chris Squire was Keith’s first choice for a bassist before even considering Greg Lake.

So yeah. Those two bands in particular have a HISTORY. I didn’t even put in the amount of times Yes asked Keith to join their band when (inevitably) one of their keyboardists would leave.

I’ve heard that Genesis and VdGG were similar in that manner, and I know Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill toured with each other, however I’m not as familiar with those bands so I can’t speak on them THAT much.
