“No way, Y/N.” Sam said as he looked at her, “there is no way this thing is a witch. Dean and I looked everywhere for hex bags or coins,” he let out a sigh.
“Not all witches use hex bags or coins, Sam,” Y/N argued. “There is a lot of lore that points to a powerful group of witches that go beyond using hex bags and coins.”
“Y/N, I'm telling you this is not the case,” Sam countered. “all the signs point to a wolf.”
“A wolf?” Y/N scoffed. “You can’t be serious. How long have you been a hunter, Sam? Did you not see the markings on the chest where the heart was carved out? Carved, not ripped.”
"So this one has more control. It's probably an older wolf," Sam retorted.
"Okay, so let's just call Rowena and find out, hmm?" Y/N sassed.
"Yeah, I’m not bringing in a witch to prove myself right. Besides, I don’t want us owing her another favor. Not to mention Dean and I’ve been hunting longer than you, okay?"
"What the fuck are you talking about, Sam? You're not right!" Y/N yelled. “Besides, I may not have been hunting since I was in diapers, but I fucking pay attention to the details of a case.”
"Alright, enough of the yelling. Y/N, Sam is right. The signs all point to a wolf," Dean interrupted, tired of the yelling.
"Are you kidding me?” Y/N looked to her boyfriend, “You're blindly standing up for what your brother is saying, but you're not going to bother listening to me?” She placed her hands on her hips, shaking her head at what she heard. “ Who has more knowledge about witches? Forget the fact that we're together; you know I'm right here. You just don't want baby brother to be mad at you."
“No, Y/N, you’re not,” Dean argued. “You are not right because we’ve seen everything and anything, and there is no way this isn’t a wolf. Besides, I’ve known Sam longer. He’s family.”
He regretted it the minute the words left his mouth, but it was too late. The slap stung and echoed in the room.
“Fuck you,” she growled. “We’re done. You can solve the fucking case yourselves.”
“Y/N,” Dean began.
“Stay the fuck away from me,” Y/N spat. “When I say we’re done, I mean it. Find a girl that will let you treat her like trash. Unfortunately, I’m not one of them.”
That was the last thing she said before packing her things and leaving the motel. She ignored the calls from both brothers, her anger taking over. How could Dean say that to her? After everything, they’ve gone through? She was there when he was torn apart by hell hounds. Tolerated his life with Lisa while she fended for herself. When Dean finally dared to admit he liked her, it was only after her drunken stupor after another round of celebratory drinks.
Only this time, she couldn’t hold in the jealousy she felt when he flirted with everyone else but her.
God, did she hate him... Well, she hated herself more than she hated him. But, nevertheless, she allowed herself to fall in love with the infamous Dean Winchester. She knew he was a playboy and a heartbreaker, but she figured he would take more care with her heart. Especially after everything that they had been through.
She was dead wrong.
She was just a mattress to him once she opened that door. She should have known. Well, he could find someone else to warm his bed, she would hunt on her own, and everything would be just fine. It would be even better if she never saw him again.
As the weeks passed, her phone continued to be lit up with messages from the brothers, which she happily ignored. She didn’t need them, and they didn’t need her.
It was better this way.
She had come off a ghoul hunt, the shower inviting and soothing. But, she also needed a drink. Lots and lots of booze just to quiet her brain from thinking of Dean.
Getting dressed, she made sure she had everything, her keys, bag, and phone.
Her phone.
Glancing down, she could see missed messages from Sam and Dean. She didn’t even bother reading or hearing the messages. Calling Dean’s number, she huffed in anger when he picked up.
“Y/N?” Dean’s voice sounded worried, “where are you?”
“Like I’m gonna tell you, asshole,” she growled. “You are not my family, remember. So you and Sam can stop blowing up my phone like you give a fuck and leave me alone. We are done. Get that through your thick, self-absorbed skull. You guys wanted me out of there. I left. So much for being the love of your life, you dick. Only took you years to realize I was always there for you. But no, you had Cassie, and Jo, then Lisa. I was never enough for you.”
“Y/N, listen,” Dean interrupted, “Baby, please.”
“Fuck. You,” she growled before hanging up the phone and tossing it on the bed.
The anger poured out of her in waves as she made her way to the local watering hole. Booze always helped calm her down. And maybe, tonight, she would find a palate cleanser. Someone that could help her forget Dean Winchester. Someone to help her forget the touches and kisses.
The bar would help her forget.
Dean’s lips on her as they fell to the bed. The scruff on his beard scratching her in a way that had her aroused beyond any means. His tongue lapping at her folds, fingers caressing the inside of her cunt, making her squeal in ecstasy.
“Dean, yes,” she moaned, fingers running through his hair as her thighs quaked.
“You ain’t seen nothing yet,” he said.
Y/N had frowned at that. Dean didn’t talk like that. When she went to say something, her complaint was cut off by his cock filling her. It felt different, but she felt full all the same.
Teeth nipping at the meat of her shoulder, fingers gripping tightly on her hip, and hips thrusting into her echoing around the room. She was in a state of bliss, and Dean was taking her to that height.
The sun shone through the ugly motel curtains, making Y/N hiss as it hit her eyes. The headache she acquired from drinking the night before was making itself known. Sitting up, she felt a mass of body next to her and closed her eyes in regret.
She couldn’t have gotten dressed fast enough. Leaving a quick thank you note, Y/N grabbed her bags and packed her car, peeling out of the parking lot before he could catch up.
“What the fuck did I do?” she grumbled to herself. Then, with her sunglasses on to shield the sun, she darted down the road and far enough away before landing at a small off-the-beaten-path diner.
Sitting in a secluded booth, Y/N's instincts were sharp. The minute Y/N sat down, though, she felt an eerie sense of calm wash over her. There was something in the air, and Y/N was sure she was going to be in trouble.
“What can I get you?” the waitress asked.
“I was hoping to order a short stack, with scrambled eggs, hashbrowns, and a side of bacon,” she ordered.
Her food came out quickly, and by the end of her meal, Y/N felt herself get groggy.
“I have waited a very long time for someone like you,” the waitress said, sliding across the table from Y/N. “A person with your lineage is hard to come by. Especially one who had her heart broken by her true love. Tragic, but perfect for the potion I need to give you.”
“What did you--” Y/N began but slumped over onto the table.
“You are going to be my new Rapunzel,” she giggled, watching as Y/N’s hair began to grow and glow.
Seven months, seven months, and Dean still couldn’t find any trace of Y/N since Sam tracked her phone to the motel she was in. The man in her bed had Dean seeing red. But could he really blame her for wanting to move on after what he said to her?
“Dean?” Sam called to his brother.
Dean continued to stare off into the empty space before him. All he could do was drink and fill himself with regret. For all he knew, Y/N was dead, and it was all his fault.
“Dean!” Sam shouted, making his brother snap out of his trance.
Dean ran a hand across his face, “what, Sam?”
“Found us a case,” Sam said, clearing his throat and handing Dean his tablet.
“What am I looking at?” Dean asked, disinterested in the article. “Just get to the point, Sammy. I want to head to bed.”
“Dean, all you do is drink,” Sam scoffed. “I mean, I know it’s what you always do, but you-- can’t you just forget her? She left, Dean. She didn’t even give us--”
“Don’t,” Dean growled. “You’re the one who said she was wrong when she was right. You’re the one I trusted to get this hunt right, and I should have trusted her instincts.”
“Why didn’t you?” Sam countered.
“I don’t know,” Dean admitted. “I just--” he ran his fingers through his hair in frustration. “I hate that you two are always constantly fighting, and I just wanted it to stop. Why can’t you trust her, Sam? She’s been with us through everything, so why couldn’t you trust her?”
“Because of that Wolf hunt back in 99’,” Sam huffed. “She got cocky because she had said her dad had taken her on a ton of wolf hunts, and she could handle it.”
“I remember that,” Dean nodded, “She wasn’t the only one who was cocky. I remember bragging about the wolf hunt we did, Summer of 96’.”
“She fucking almost got you killed, Dean!” Sam exploded. “I couldn’t trust her after that.”
Dean grabbed Sam by his shirt and pushed him up against one of the bunker’s walls, “she pushed herself to research more and train harder after that. We were fucking kids, man. You were thinking about leaving.”
Sam looked into Dean’s eyes and sighed, “I’m sorry, okay. I just--” he licked his lips, “I almost lost you, and I couldn't see that. It was that hunt that gave me the final push to try and go to college, get out of hunting.”
“Yeah, and now she’s probably dead,” Dean pushed away from Sam. “Worst of all, I sided with you because you’re my brother. I always trust your judgment, but when It comes to Y/N, I also wanted to just keep her safe. I was an idiot.”
“Well,” a voice called from the top of the stairs, “Is there trouble in paradise, boys.”
“Rowena, what are you doing here?” Dean growled, glaring at Sam.
“I called her,” Sam sighed.
“After the shit, you gave Y/N about calling her, you called this Witch Bitch here?”
“I beg your pardon,” Rowena called, “but who else is going to help you against Mother Gothel?”
“Who? What is she talking about, Sam?” Dean grumbled, making his way to the drink cart and pouring himself a glass of whiskey.
“Mother Gothel has been healing witches and working for the grand coven, boy-o,” Rowena sassed, making her way down the stairs and towards Dean, where she stole his glass of whiskey and drank it. “Slainte.”
“Gazuntite,” Dean said, glaring at her. “Why should we care about this, Mother Gothel?”
“Because, you pea-brained oaf,” Rowena sighed, “she has found herself a conduit to produce healing magic. Not only healing magic but a conduit that can amplify a witch’s power tenfold.”
“Okay,” Dean rubbed his eyes. “We take out the conduit, and everything is good, right. No conduit, witches don’t get the boost.”
“If you kill the girl, it would only--”
“Wait, Girl?” Dean questioned, “What girl?”
“I don’t know, but all I know is that seven months ago, Gothel procured a girl who had her heart broken by her true love making her vulnerable. She also is of a hunter bloodline that specifically kills witches. A scarce breed thought to have died out.”
“So do we rescue the girl or kill her?” Sam asked.
“Rescue,” Dean said at the same time Rowena said, “Kill her, obviously.”
“We are not going to kill an innocent girl,” Dean growled. “Now give us the info we need, and we can take care of Gothel.”
“I heard you mention something about losing the lass you courted,” Rowena sighed, “You know, I could help you find her.”
Dean looked over at Sam, who seemed engrossed in whatever he was looking at on his phone. Rowena had asked Dean for something that had belonged to Y/N, which was sentimental in value. The only thing Dean could think of was a locket he had given her before they broke up. Dean found it in the motel where they last caught wind of her.
“Where is she?” Dean growled at the man in the unmade bed.
Dean knew what happened. He could see the bites and scratch marks on the stranger.
“I don’t know, she left, man. I mean, girl was a wild cat,” the stranger chuckled. “She kept calling me Dean, though. But no matter, her pussy was--”
The man didn’t even have time to finish the sentence when Dean began beating his face in. It took Sam all of his strength to pull Dean off.
“You ever talk about her like that again, and I will kill you,” Dean barked.
As he was driving, he could feel the locket hot and heavy on his chest. Rowena said that it would lead him to Y/N. But she wasn’t specific as to how.
“So get this,” Sam spoke, breaking the silence between them. “According to the article, a few men have said they’ve seen a large tower in a fog and a girl with long hair.” He let out a small scoff, “most of the men were able to climb up the tower and were ‘knocked out’ before they could see the face of the girl.”
“Okay, why is that important?” Dean grumbled, adjusting himself in his seat. The drive was already getting to them.
“Well, before they stumbled on the tower, they had perfect vision,” Sam explained. “Not exactly out of the story, but similar to it.”
“What do you mean?” Dean asked.
“Well, in the story, the prince gets blinded after the witch cuts off Rapunzel’s hair and sends her to a swamp. See, the witch takes Rapunzel’s braid and pretends to be her. When the prince climbs up and realizes it’s the witch, he’s pushed out of the window and onto the rose bushes below, blinding him.”
“So we’re looking for a tower, like in the story,” Dean surmised.
“I guess so,” Sam sighed. He looked out the window and noticed Dean was driving in the direction of the woods. “What are you doing? We need to head into town.”
“I just have this gut feeling we should head this way,” Dean muttered, his hand absently brushing the locket around his neck under his shirt.
“Well, I say we head to the town and question some people,” Sam argued. “Besides, you look like you could use some sleep.”
Dean didn’t argue as he stayed silent. But the pull to head in the other direction became slightly stronger the closer he got to their destination. The drive to the town wasn’t that long, only a few minutes.
Parking Baby close to the motel office, Dean opted to let Sam get the room. First, he needed to try and calm down. Could the necklace be signaling that Y/N was in town? He couldn’t ignore the fact that the locket felt warm against his skin. That and the intense feeling of needing to head in a particular direction.
Reaching into his shirt, he pulled the locket out and studied it. He remembered when he gave it to Y/N. Inside, he had placed a picture of the two of them from their first date.
Dean saw Sam walking towards the impala from the corner of his eye and hastily put the locket away. How could he have been so stupid? He was sure he lost her forever, and if his track record on love was anything to go by, then she had moved on, or worse, was dead.
“Got us a room on the bottom floor,” Sam said as he climbed into the passenger seat. “Once we settle in, we can go out for interviews.”
Dean parked the impala right in front of their room door. He was sluggish as he made his way out of the car and towards the room.
“Dean?” Sam said, worry filling his voice.
“I’m fine,” Dean dismissed with a fake smile plastered on his face. “I’m always fine, Sammy.”
That night, after gathering as much information as they could, Dean lay in bed, curled into himself as his dreams filled with the familiar images of Y/N.
“Can’t catch me,” her voice sang.
“Don’t write checks your ass can’t catch, Sweetheart,” Dean chuckled as he chased after her.
They were in the bunker, giggles, and laughs echoing through the halls as Dean chased after her. He would try and follow in her direction, and suddenly she was behind him.
“How did you get over there?” he wondered, following her through the long twist and turns of the hallway.
The scene around Dean changed, and he found himself surrounded by a forest.
“Y/N?” he called out, “where did you go?”
“Dean,” she sang, “I’m over here.”
He turned towards the sound of her voice, his heart pounding and the heat from the locket radiating. He followed the sound of her voice, calling every so often.
“Marco,” he chuckled. “Come on, sweetheart,” he called. “Where are you? I miss you.”
“Polo,” she called back.
Dean continued his search for what seemed like days in his dream. The light-giving away to dark as he continued his search. A fog rolled in, and Dean could feel fear creeping in. He began to panic when she stopped replying to his call.
“Y/N? Answer me, where are you, Sweetheart?” his voice echoed.
“Dean!”
He turned his head towards her panicked voice, legs pushing fast and hard in the direction it came from. He urged himself to move more quickly until he smacked into a large tower. He looked up to see a long braid falling down. His eyebrow raised at it, and something told him to climb up.
Checking to ensure it was sturdy, Dean began making his way up using the braid as a rope. When he reached the window, his breath caught in his throat.
“Let her go, you bitch,” he growled at the woman holding Y/N by her neck.
“She’s mine.”
Before Dean could react, a blast of light shot out of the witch and blasted him in the chest. Dean’s body shot out of the window, and he was falling endlessly.
Dean shot up in his bed. A sheen of sweat coated his brow. He wasn’t sure what he saw, but there was one thing he knew for sure, Y/N was in trouble. He could feel it deep in his bones. Whatever Rowena did to the locket worked. He was going to find her.
At the first crack of dawn, Dean quietly woke up and got ready to explore the forest. The dream he had wouldn't leave him. Dean had to find Y/N, with or without Sam. He had to apologize. Even if she didn’t take him back, he had to make things right.
As he was about to open the door, he felt a hand on his shoulder, making him jump. Dean turned to see Sam glaring at him.
“Going somewhere?” He huffed.
“Yeah, to find Y/N,” Dean admitted. “Rowena spelled her locket to help me find her, and Sam, she’s here. If we can find her, she can help us with the case. She can help us free this girl, gank this Gothel bitch, and we can all talk about what happened.”
Sam sighed and nodded, “yeah.” Sam ran his fingers through his hair. He could tell he had messed things up between Dean and Y/N, “I gotta apologize too. I know it wasn’t entirely her fault what happened on that wolf hunt. I should have realized she did everything she could to correct her mistake from back then.”
“Okay,” Dean said, placing a hand on his baby brother’s shoulder, “Then let's find Y/N and gank us a witch.”
The brothers made their way through the forest, trying to find the markings that the victims tried to describe. But Dean was following the locket. It seemed to pulsate with every step he took as he and Sam walked farther and farther into the forest.
“I think we’re getting close to Y/N,” Dean told Sam, “This thing feels like it’s vibrating like crazy.”
“Uh, Dean,” Sam’s worried tone had Dean shooting his head in Sam's direction. “I think Y/N might be in the tower.”
“No,” Dean let out, “she wouldn’t try to take the witch on her own. She knows better than that.”
Sam walked around the perimeter, trying to find a door, Dean following behind him. Both brothers failed to see one and began moving back slowly until they found the one small window.
“Think if we act the story out, it will work?” Dean asked.
Before they could say anything, a long braid made its way down.
“I will be back,” a voice called, “You can’t escape Rapunzel. You are mine. You’ve been trying and failing for months now.” She cackled, “no one is coming for you. Now, clean this place up. I have some ingredients to collect before Olivette comes to visit.”
The Brothers rushed towards some bushes to hide behind, watching the witch put her hood over her head and disappeared into the fog. They waited until they were sure the coast was clear to come out of hiding. Then, making their way up to the tower, Dean looked up and swallowed the lump in his throat.
“Well, time to see if the fairy tale has any truth to it.” He let out, taking a deep breath he called out, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your--”
Before he could finish, the massive braid that came tumbling down hit him in the head. Sam snorted at sight and stopped when Dean glared at him.
“Could have waited until I finished,” Dean grumbled.
He made sure the rope of hair was sturdy before he started climbing up. Finally, he made it to the window and looked down to see Sam following behind him. Looking around inside, all Dean could see was a small hook that held a portion of the hair. He followed the rest of it to a dark corner of the room. The locket around his neck vibrating intensely.
“Is anyone here?” he called softly. “We’re here to help you.”
“Go away,” the voice called back.
Dean shuddered at the familiar sound of the voice. But it couldn’t be, could it?
“Look, Sweetheart, whoever you are, just know that you can trust us. We’re--”
“You need to leave now, Dean,” the voice called.
Dean stood straighter as the shadow in the corner moved to the light. He let out a small gasp as a familiar pair of eyes stared right into his.
“Y/N?” his voice cracked. “How did she--”
“It doesn’t matter. You need to go,” Y/N repeated. “She’s too powerful, Dean. She can’t be defeated.”
“You know that’s bullshit,” Dean let out as he moved closer to her, a pained expression on his face when Y/N moved back.
“Y/N,” Sam made his presence known. “You gotta let us--”
“I don’t have to help you do shit, asshole,” she spat at Sam.
“So what, you’re just gonna stay here and let her use you as some conduit, thing?” Dean huffed. “Y/N, I’ve been looking for you for months, I found you, I’m not letting you go.”
“Dean, you don’t--”
“Don’t you dare finish that sentence with I don’t want you, you don’t get to say that, Y/N? Not to me.” He interrupted, shaking his head in shame. “I’m sorry, Y/N. You were right about everything, and I should have backed you up.”
Before Y/N could respond, there was a sound from below the tower.
“You two need to hide,” Y/N hissed. “If she finds you--”
“We just pump her full of witch-killing bullets,” Dean shrugged, looking around for the best place to hide.
It happened in a flash. Gothel had found the brothers, knocked out Sam, and stabbed Dean with a cursed knife.
“Let me heal him,” she begged. “Please, I will stay with you forever. No trying to escape, no complaining, and being obedient in every task I am given. Just please let me heal him.”
Gothel had restrained Sam and shackled Dean to the wooden post by the window.
“What are you doing?” Dean asked as he hissed in pain while Y/N held him.
“Shhh,” she tried to comfort him, “You gotta listen to me. You let me go. You go and live your life and forget me, Dean.”
“No way, Y/N,” Dean coughed and groaned in pain. “That’s not happenin’.”
“If you come after us, she’ll kill you and Sam. That can’t happen. I am trying to save your life, Winchester.”
Y/N never noticed the shard of broken mirror Dean held in his hand as she leaned closer to his wound.
“Y/N,” Dean called out to her.
When Y/N looked up, he took his chance to cup her face leaning in to give her a sweet kiss before grabbing her hair and using the shard to cut it short.
“Nooooo,” Gothel cried. “What have you done! You stupid hunter! It will take me months to grow that power from her again.”
“Hey,” Sam called, getting Gothel’s attention before firing a bullet into her chest.
Gothel let out a painful yell as she fell over onto the floor, dead.
“Dean, no no, no no no,” Y/N cried. She took his hand and placed it into her hair. Saying the spell she had been taught to recite to activate the healing properties. “You can’t, not now.”
Sam continued to watch as she sobbed on top of Dean’s wounds, her tears falling as she continued to say the spell, like a prayer.
“Please come back,” Sam heard Y/N pleading. “I love you, Dean. I never stopped, and I’m sorry. I should have talked to you. I shouldn’t have shut you out.”
“Y/N, it’s not all your fault,” Sam said, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. “I should have listened to you. I should have trusted you, and I put Dean in the middle, and that’s not fair.”
Y/N sobbed onto Dean’s wound before moving up to press a kiss to his lips. Her forehead rested on his, the tears flowing down her face. As Sam and Y/N began to mourn, Sam noticed a small light coming from Dean’s wound before it flashed brightly, creating a flower pattern.
“Y/N, what was in the potion?” Sam asked as he watched Dean beginning to breathe again.
“She called it a golden flower. It’s a weird plant that literally is the power of the sun.” Y/N explained as Dean opened his eyes.
“Hey, didn’t I die?” Dean asked, looking around the tower, “where’s Gothel?”
“Dead,” Sam answered, “and yeah, congratulations on your millionth resurrection. I believe you get a trip to Disney World with this one.”
“Shut up,” Dean grumbled, pushing Sam away. “Y/N,” He let out, looking to the woman who held his heart, “Y/N, I--”
Dean didn’t get to finish as Y/N kissed him. Her mouth molded perfectly to his.
“Let’s get out of here, and we can talk about everything over a bacon cheeseburger,” Y/N said when they pulled away. “Stupid bitch refused to feed me burgers for seven months.”
“Anything for my girl,” Dean chuckled.
“I take it this means you two made up?” Sam asked, smiling at the couple.
“If he’ll want me after I tell him about--”
“I know,” Dean breathed, “I know about the guy, and it’s okay, you were hurt, and we can work through it.”
Y/N smiled and nodded, helping Dean up and leading Sam towards the door they were trying to find.
“You know he said you kept calling him, Dean,” Dean admitted. “Guess that means he wasn’t all that great?”
“No one can ever measure up to you, Babe,” Y/N giggled.
“Guys,” Sam whined, “can you save it for when I’m not anywhere near you?” he asked.
Dean and Y/N let out a few chuckles as they exited the tower and towards the town. The witch was defeated, and a new adventure awaited them.
“Daishirō doesn't remember Kēisuke doing anything with kit’s hair before they fell asleep, nonetheless gathering all eight jō of it into a mountain at futon’s the head. Ku could have sworn the kitsune’s hair had been left trailing around the room, some of it even spilling down the staircase, and that the five of them had had to maneuver the tresses this-way-and-that to avoid laying on the incredibly long strands.”
