Saying ‘I love you’ for the first time to someone, I have made it this big thing in my head, wanting that perfect moment, when the stars align, I hope I’m brave enough to do it properly and I’m excited for that moment, if I get lucky enough.
(It’s something I have messed up before)
But I’ve been thinking recently, and I realised I’m also looking forward to when it’s not a big deal to say it and all the small ways it can be said.
The ‘Love ya’ as I head out to the store.
The last gentle kiss before we fall asleep.
The ‘I love you’ when I catch their eye after we both laugh at the same dumb joke a movie.
The soft smile we share as we catch each other’s eyes from across the party while we’re talking to different people.
The little texts we send that simply say it, throughout the day, just when we thought of each other.
Those quiet afternoons when we sit together and our hands reach out to one another.
‘I love you’ doesn’t always have to be big, it just has to be real.
