This may or may not have more. I just needed to get it out.
--------------
It was a mistake.
Or at least that's what Bruce kept telling himself.
He's spent the last six weeks avoiding anything Justice League related, opting out of meetings and even ignoring alerts in Metropolis knowing the others would take up the slack.
There was no reason to dwell, knowing the outcome was this, and it wasn't as if Clark cared.
He was back with Lois.
Bruce had seen the pictures.
So many pictures.
Bruce rubbed his eyes, sighed, and gritted his teeth when he heard an alarm go off near the manor.
He clicked the camera, a whir going by fast, and his chest tightened as he turned it off.
Clark's footsteps were oddly memorable than most, a strong gait, and when he heard a throat clear he turned to see the Man of Steel looking oddly flustered.
"Superman."
The hurt in Clark's eyes made him wish he'd said his name.
"Batman, I....I need to speak with you."
Bruce sighed. "I'm a bit...."
"It's four a.m.," Clark countered, leaning over him almost too close, "You come in from your night at three. I know you're not busy, Bruce."
His jaw tightened. "Ok," he said, his voice almost too even, "What is it?"
Clark's silence annoyed Bruce when the man himself had announced the discussion, but the fear in his eyes worried him.
"Clark?"
He looked at Bruce, hands squeezing at his sides, and whispered, "I didn't know."
"Didn't know, what?"
Clark pulled out a picture so fast he didn't have time to register where it came from.
It was blurry, to be sure, but unmistakable.
An ultrasound.
Bruce felt like ice had been poured into his veins as he stared at it.
"Congratulations," he said, his voice almost a growl, "I'm sure Lois..."
Clark grabbed his wrist hard, and Bruce looked up to see tears in his eyes. "Lois isn't....it's mine," Clark said, his voice shaking, "Mine and....yours."
Bruce pushed him back hard and stood up angrily.
"Don't be ridiculous, Clark, men...."
Clark grabbed Bruce and nearly threw him against the cave wall, rattling everything around them as a tear fell down his cheek.
"WHY WOULD I LIE, BRUCE? Huh? Why.....it was a mistake," he whispered, his voice tight, "We both said it was and we....were trapped. I was depowered, no one....no one knew. But we knew," he snatched the picture up fast and pushed it in Bruce's face, "This is our child and I'm not getting rid of it. I...." he stepped back and sniffled, "I know you're avoiding me now and I get it. I get that nothing is the same and we made a mistake. I get it. I just thought you should know. That's all."
Bruce didn't have even a second to respond before Clark was gone, and the ultrasound photo fell to the floor. He leaned down and picked it up, hand shaking, and let out a long breath.
A baby.
His baby.
He'd avoided this for years and now somehow here it was coming from the one person he would never have expected.
Bruce was still struggling in Gotham after horrors the Riddler put his city through, exhausted most nights when he got home but when he saw the headline he was….intrigued.
It was a welcome distraction reading articles in the coming weeks with interviews and even pictures of the alien in Metropolis.
He’d come home, pull up the newest set his set system collected, and just fall into it. Alfred almost caught him a few times but Bruce had that covered, switching screens as he took a late dinner or even just let the older man fuss.
“You know,” Alfred said finally after nearly two months, “It’s ok to move on from her.”
Bruce blinked. “From who?”
“Miss Kyle. She’s been gone for months and if you’ve found someone who makes you smile as wide as I’ve caught you, it’s a good thing.”
He felt himself blush as he downed the tea he’d been given and stood. “There’s no one.”
“Very well.”
Bruce tried to stop himself after that, the indulgence childish and not worth his time, but he didn’t last long.
The sight of Superman’s perfect smile or just bright shining costume would calm him in ways nothing else could. He told himself it was fine especially if it helped his mission.
Then, of course, Superman came to Gotham.
Bruce wasn’t expecting it, too caught up in the new rise of costumed thugs who tried to rival the Riddler’s spectacle, and was piled on by four men in dog costumes calling themselves The Pound when suddenly he wasn’t.
Superman stood there, floating like it was entirely normal, and held the four men with ease.
“I don’t want to step on your toes, but you looked like you needed help.”
He had to force himself to look away. “I could’ve handled it.”
“Even so—"
Bruce used a grappling hook to get away, dangerously close to blushing, and started to run across a nearby roof when again Superman was there. The alien landed in front of him and frowned.
“Did I overstep? I’m sorry this is all new to me but I wanted to introduce myself. My name is…”
“Superman.”
“Well yes, but you can call me Kal. That’s my name, Kal…."
“El,” Bruce said without thinking.
Kal’s face lit up. “Yes! You know me? Oh that’s wonderful! I know you probably don’t want to tell me your real name and that’s fine but I’m glad you know all about me. It would be much more awkward if you didn’t.”
Bruce sighed. “Yeah, well…you can go now. I’ve got it under control here.”
Kal looked around, his frown deep, and then looked at Bruce. “I don’t mean to be a Negative Nelly really I don’t really think you do. It’s ok to admit for my help that’s why I came. If—"
“I DON’T WANT YOUR HELP!”
Bruce felt like he’d kicked a puppy when he saw Kal’s face. “Oh. I…I’m sorry Batman. I won’t bother you again.”
His chest felt tight as he watched him go, sliding down to the roof top, and sighed.
It was probably better.
Superman just wouldn’t fit in Gotham.
Bruce went home that night both exhausted and upset remembering how happy Superman, Kal, had seemed. He told himself it didn’t matter, that he’d never see the man again, but then goddamn Lex Luthor put out feelers for a “project” he had in the works that was hush hush.
A way to be safe from the “invasion.”
And Bruce couldn’t say no.
So he was in Metropolis on a jet ready to find out just what Lex had planned for Superman.
It was there, unbeknownst to him, that the reporter from the Daily Planet who wrote so many articles about Superman was waiting for what Lex called “A New Tomorrow.” The catchphrase was a sham, most of the rich investors all knew it, but the reporters didn’t.
Though Kent, Clark Kent, still asked all the right questions.
“Mr. Luthor, what exactly is ‘A New Tomorrow’? I can’t help but think you’re being purposefully vague.”
“Mr. Luthor, you’ve allocated nearly half your net worth to this project. Why?”
“Mr. Luthor….”
Bruce was impressed, smiling slightly as he watched Luthor struggle. Kent was ready to pounce on any inconsistency but Lex sidestepped them all.
But Bruce was fixated on Kent so much so that the man in question noticed. The slight blush as Clark looked away made his heart skip a beat and he found himself walking across the room.
“I’m not sure we’ve formally met,” he held out his hand, “Bruce Wayne.”
Clark blinked at Bruce , then pushed his glasses up on his nose, and shook his hand.
“Clark Kent, The Daily….”
“I know who you are,” he teased, “Everyone here does. Lex hasn’t been that on edge since I’ve know him.”
“I was just….”
“It was a compliment,” Bruce said, sipping his wine, “I think he’ll reconsider the whole thing truth be told.”
“I hope so, whatever he has planned sounds not good.”
They shared a look.
Bruce thought for the fist time he might have finally found a fixation to replace Superman. Kent was clean cut, human, and so bland yet oddly charming.
Then Lex came out to announce he’d “reconsidered the direction” of his project and Bruce knew it meant he’d take it underground. He’d have to keep an eye on Luthor it seemed.
He turned to say something to Clark Kent but found the man gone.
It was just as well.
Clark didn’t need to give him more than his performance tonight and his writing talent to quench his addiction to Superman.
Bruce left the event, heading towards his car, and then was jumped. It happened so fast he couldn’t respond and they started to demand his wallet as he pretended to be nervous.
“Just give me….”
“HURRY UP!”
“Maybe I can help?”
Superman appeared like an avenging angel, knocking out the would be muggers, and even landed to check on Bruce.
“Mister Wayne, are you alright?” he asked, touching the mark on his eye, “I’m sorry I couldn’t get here sooner.”
Bruce’s heart was pounding in his chest.
Oh no.
It wasn’t going away.
If anything this encounter would make things worse.
“No, I’m….fine.”
“If you’re sure….”
He nodded. “Thank you, Superman.”
The Kryponian smiled. “You’re very welcome. I’ll wait for you to get to your vehicle safely.”
“You….”
“Yes, I do.”’
Bruce was then walked to his Bentley, blushing hard, and when he got inside Superman tapped the window. He rolled it down and was given a hand to shake. The touch made his skin tingle.
“Have a great night!”
He watched Kal fly away and slumped in his seat.
If he ever had to come here again or even see the man he’d have a hard time hiding his attraction to him
